Today we’d like to introduce you to Ling Chu.
Ling, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I came from China to US at spring of 1996. I spent two years in Seattle. Teaching dance at my friend company and become a mother. My son was born at New Year’s Eve at 1997. Six months later, I realized must set up my career. Otherwise no way to go. I spend almost all of money to buy a fly ticket to New York. I believe my dance dream is in the city. Remember how excited when I find so many studios in NYC. I was taking different class every day and all day long. Even watching class for lunch. At night, I sleep at friends places. Sometimes on couch or floor. I don’t feel poor…about three months later. Until one day, an old friend invited me to Harvard Yanjing library for a workshop. It was a week plan trip. After the workshop, an elegant lady brought her daughter to the place I lived. She want me to teach the little girl dance. At the next day they are here again. She brought her friends to me. It’s the three little girl’s class. So, I stayed in Boston. I found dance school at 1998 at Boston. Opened my studio on Kneeland St for 17 years… I moved my business to my neighborhood South End at few years ago. I enjoyed the multicultural areas.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Extremely difficult be: single mother/ artist/ dance teacher / first generation of immigrant at the same time.
