Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Foley.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
According to my family, I was born with the “fashion gene” as I come from a long line of entrepreneurs in the business. Apparently this goes back many generations, but what I witnessed growing up was a grandfather in the shoe business and a father manufacturing clothing that was sold wholesale all over the country.
Meanwhile, both of my grandmothers were obsessed, and prided theme less on their “impeccable taste” and love for the thrill of the buy! I instinctively followed along, starting with meticulously dressing dolls and Barbies (and most importantly, myself!) at a very early age. I knew this was my destiny.
After college, I began a career in advertising at Hill Holliday, then moved on to the TJX companies where I produced ad campaigns for Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and HomeGoods, working closely with professional wardrobe stylists on the shoots. Once I had my first son, 11 years ago, I wanted a flexible career. I had always thought about starting my own styling business, so when I was approached by two friends who asked if I would “go through their closets,” it all clicked. That is where it all began!
Currently, my clients run the gamut from male and female executives, to local celebrities, teenagers, and moms that want to get their style back after having kids. My forte is “connecting” with my clients, to really understand “who they are” and how they can look and feel their best. It is different for everyone. Everyone has their “own style” and personality and that is what I key in on.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have definitely have slower months usually, in the summer and winter, but for the most part each year it gets busier and busier!
Also, juggling family demands with 2 busy boys (i.e. hockey, school events) can sometimes be challenging, but I have a wonderful support system with my family who live in the area and an incredibly supportive husband.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
LF Personal Style is a business based on helping people feel and look their best!
I always say: “You don’t have to be a celebrity to have someone help you look your best.”
I have an innate way of understanding people and their bodies. I joke sometimes that I’m 50% therapist, 50 % stylist. I think this sets me apart from other stylists. I am told that I am not “intimidating” or overly judgmental (only when necessary!) I do a la carte services. I like to get to know my clients, I have them fill out a questionnaire before I meet them. Some people just need closet editing and a clean out. I then provide them with a list of items I feel they should add to their wardrobe.
With some clients, I “shop and drop” at their house, based on a detailed list and discussion. But, with most of my clients I usually take them shopping to a destination based on their time, budget and needs. I also do packing for travel. I also will send clients online links of items they can buy if they don’t have time to shop.
What were you like growing up?
I was a happy and “super social” kid. I always was watching people and loved to see how they dressed. I was an athlete and dancer; I really liked to try everything.
I loved dressing my dolls and Barbie’s, I used to spend hours playing. I also picked out my outfits as a kid, and obviously loved to shop. My mother not so much, which I think gave me an independent flare when it came to shopping. She would always tell me if you want that item, “make the money I’ll split the cost with you!”
I studied Art History, marketing, and sociology in college. I also got to travel around the world, which definitely opened my eyes to the different cultures and fashions.
