Meet Lila Reid of DNA Skin Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lila Reid.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lila. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I used to work in the corporate world and decided to go to school to become an esthetician as I was feeling burnt out and needed a change. I got a job in a great spa full-time and really loved it. I love skin care and helping people feel better whether it’s just to relax or deal with specific issues. I love that my job never gets boring, There is always someone different before me with a different story and different needs. I got married and when I had my first child I knew I wanted to be home with him. I switched to working part-time, two nights and Saturdays this allowed me to stay home with the baby. Three children and 12 years later at the same spa my kids were now in school and I really wanted to be closer to home. The spa I have been working at is about a 40 minute drive. I began to think how great it would be to have my own little place close to home that I could work around the kids’ schedules especially with them getting older and becoming involved in extracurricular activities. I felt confident that I could start my own business. Why not; life is full of adventures and I was willing to take a trip! I really love esthetics and felt my passion and love for my work could make this work. Big risk, yes. I would be starting over after 13 years! I spent a lot of time putting a spa menu together and coming up with a business name. This is where DNA Skin Care was born.

Dylan, Nicole, Amanda those are the names of my three children in order of their birth (DNA). How awesome is that! It was perfect. I started looking at places to rent. I walked into the building that I am currently located in and knew this was the place for me. I got those butterflies in my belly, It has such a great vibe. Not pursuing this idea would surely bring regret for me some day and I do not believe in regrets. One lease year at a time I told myself, So here I am in my hometown, yes the risk was worth it.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I feel fortunate in that I can say my road was smooth. After all this was a choice I was making not something I am being forced to do. My struggle was within myself in that I dedicated my time to my children and making the decision to start my business might interfere with my time with my children. Putting my desire to have my own business into action was a struggle for me as a mother. The idea of starting over with no clients after having a steady flow of clients for 13 years was a definite struggle. Not having the phone ring, not having the finances to advertise or market myself has been a definite struggle.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I am so fortunate to have a great support system. My kids first and foremost have made me who I am. They inspire me to be the best me that I can be. They have so much love for me and believe I can do anything. My husband has always supported any of my crazy ideas. He doesn’t try to talk me out of anything I set my mind to even though I know he secretly might want to. I have wonderful friends and many clients who kept telling me through the years how good I was at what I did and really believe I have a special touch. With their constant positive and feedback, I grew the courage to take a chance.
