Today we’d like to introduce you to Li Zheng.
Li, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated from the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, China’s most prestigious institution of traditional Chinese medicine in 1987. Afterwards, I completed five-years of residence training in the hospital of the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in neurology, cardiology, nephrology, gynecology and surgery. Then, I did a one year fellowship in the same hospital. I got my Ph.D. in neuroscience at the Medical College of Ohio. I moved with my family to Boston around 2000 and started teaching as a professor at the New England School of Acupuncture. I have treated many difficult health problems such as weight loss, arthritis, diabetes, cystitis, atrial fibrillation, Raynaud’s, acid reflux, IBS, glaucoma, macular degeneration, insomnia, migraines tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, neuropathy, allergies, impotence and depression successfully for the past 20 years. Around 2004, I opened Boston Chinese Acupuncture in Needham as my own independent practice. Based on my 27 years of clinical experiences, I wrote two books: Acupuncture and Hormone Balance and Acupuncture & Chinese herbs for Common Diseases. As the founder of Boston Chinese Acupuncture and Director of Natural Medicine at the American Chinese Medicine Exchange Society, my goal is to find the root cause of each disease and help people restore balance to their bodies with acupuncture and herbs.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I first started private practice in Boston, I only used acupuncture and herbs to fix patients’ problems. I got frustrated sometimes because it is difficult to solve the health problems with acupuncture treatment once a week and most Americans do not like the taste of herbs. After I wrote my two books, I started educating patients with research and my clinical experiences. I started giving them suggestions to help them get rid of their problems with lifestyle changes and more frequent acupuncture treatments, such as twice a week for 12 weeks. With these changes, patients got healthier faster and saved their money and time.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Boston Chinese Acupuncture story. Tell us more about the business.
Boston Chinese Acupuncture uses holistic tools such as acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and lifestyle changes to bring happiness and health to patients. We specialize in treating weight loss, arthritis, diabetes, cystitis, atrial fibrillation, stroke, Raynaud’s, acid reflux, IBS, glaucoma, macular degeneration, insomnia, stress, anxiety, tendonitis, neuropathy, allergies, and depression. I am known for my successes treating infertility, eye problems such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, prostate problems, and facial rejuvenation. My partner, Dr. Zhou, specializes in treating pain, tendonitis, sciatica, high blood pressure, plantar fasciitis, migraines, impotence, and quitting smoking. Our clinic focuses on treating the root cause of the problems: we help patients use acupuncture and herbs to establish a healthier lifestyle so they do not need to spend money on acupuncture forever.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have been in working in acupuncture practice, research, and education for 27 years. I think we do not always have good luck or bad luck. As long as we work hard and have a positive attitude, we can change the bad luck into good luck. When I turned 42 years old, all my medical knowledge came together and connected in my brain, giving me the power to figure out the root cause of each medical condition and to help patients solve their difficult health issues after they visited so many hospitals.
