Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Rampello.
Lauren, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
While I have dabbled in self tanner my whole life, I was first exposed to custom spray tan services while living in Southern California. I quickly learned that the innovative sprays they had out west were surprisingly natural looking, and I was shocked to discover that some of the most beautiful tans I was seeing were not real. While impressed and enthused, I know better than to put chemicals all over my body for the sake of beauty. But instead of quickly refusing the option, I decided to look into what were in today’s spray tans, and learned to my delight that technology had improved sprays to not only look authentic, but to be healthy and safe.
It didn’t take long for me to discover that the options available in Boston didn’t meet my standard of safe, so I decided to start Pure Glow. I would make it my job to share my passion for healthy tanning, educate people on clean beauty and help people understand that some of the most beautiful tans may not be brown.
Pure Glow started as a full scale mobile business, which means that we were exclusively traveling to client’s homes, offices, dorms or other private space. Since our mission has been to make a hyper healthy, eco-cert organic and nontoxic spray tanning accessible to Bostonians from the very beginning, I wanted to start with minimal costs and reach as many people as possible, to prove that enough people cared about a truly safe alternative to UV and conventional spray tanning, and loved the way our tan performed before we expanded into a studio space. The response was overwhelmingly positive from the start, and quickly our regular client base grew, they were referring their friends and raving about how much better the tan was than anything they had tried before. It took many months to find a studio space that was centrally located to where our existing clients lived and worked (by their request!), but we finally found a great space in the middle of Newbury Street. The street and neighborhood fully embraced us, and we couldn’t be happier with the choice over a year later. Today we see many of the clients that started with us in the early days, and we love meeting new faces each day too.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always many! Traveling and traversing the city as we did with our mobile service offerings is a tremendous amount of work. You can be booked in Newton, and then in Downtown, next in South End and then out to Brookline, the sequence and location of appointments being out of your control. Traffic and accidents, especially at our busiest hours of 5-8PM can become a real stressor when you have 30 minutes to arrive at your next appointment on time. Now add parking into that equation and you can see how quickly things can go wrong. While we got everything down to a science early on, a concierge business is not without its obstacles.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Pure Glow – what should we know?
We believe that you should never compromise your health for beautiful, natural looking color. We believe that what you put on your skin is just as important as what you put in your body. We also believe that when you look good, you feel even better. Pure Glow is a custom organic spray tanning service helping Bostonians tan year round without exposure to damaging UV rays or toxic chemicals. All tans are applied by hand in under 15 minutes, for an even, contoured and flawless application.
Aside from our clean beauty expertise and personalized service, we’ve made custom spray tanning our sole focus. As such, you will find no other solution, application or technique more innovative and thoughtful. Since spray tanning has been around for a while, we were in the unique position to improve all the things we didn’t like about conventional sprays. You won’t smell funny, you’ll dry right away, you won’t mess up your tan once you leave, it won’t come off on your clothes, and you’ll never be too light or too dark or look unnatural.
If you’re a complete novice, we’ll walk you through everything and answer your questions in full ahead of time. If you’re spraying for your wedding, you can have confidence knowing that we will be detailed oriented for the perfect spray, even when you’ve never sprayed before in your life, two days before your wedding. If you’ve tried everything before and have had some hokey experiences in the past, you’re likely to have an improved (and super fun!) experience with us.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think passion and integrity can be attributed too much of our success thus far.
Myself and our staff are passionate, enthusiastic and outspoken about what we do and how we do it. We want clients to learn with us, we want them to become knowledgeable about what’s in their personal care and beauty products in an effort to help them make good decisions. Education is empowering and feeling good is invigorating – tanning with Pure Glow evokes both.
I think integrity speaks to the trust that we have built within our community of tanners, which comes from transparency (full ingredient list available publicly on our website), the validity of what we discuss and promote, and from delivering a consistent, quality experience again and again.
