Meet Lauren Johnston of Sew Easy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Johnston.

Lauren Johnston, owner and founder of Sew Easy has operated since 1995. For 21 years this business has taught over 17,000 kids how to sew. Beginning in her home with the neighborhood children, she soon realized the value of this “screen-less, 10-finger activity”. Armed with personal expertise, a superb gut instinct, and market research, she opened the doors of Sew Easy for Kids in Needham, MA. Today, Sew Easy for Kids has added a Wellesley, MA and a Naples, FL location.

Lauren is a native of Boston, MA educated in business and textiles at Massachusetts Bay Community College and Framingham University. Her extraordinary success from starting a sewing school before anyone even thought about it and basically bringing back the lost art of sewing to Metro West Boston shows her skills of resourcefulness, confidence, relentlessness, and strong common sense in volumes.

Kids, ages 6 through 17 years old, learn the old fashioned life skill of how to operate a sewing machine, select fun fabrics and patterns, and complete five to ten projects during a program.

The company mission is to instill in each student, self-confidence, creativity and the desire to succeed! While we empower our children, Sew Easy has had a strong emphasis on patience and cooperation in the classes, as well as building skills in decision-making. These skills will stay with students throughout their lives.

Sew Easy disseminates an old-fashioned skill that is still indispensable in this high-tech age.

Today, the art of sewing is even more in demand as it is a “retro” craft making a resurgence, and is also due to the popularity of TV shows like Project Runway.

Sew Easy has mastered the art of teaching children to sew with her proven techniques developed and enhanced over the years. With a jaw-dropping history of business excellence, over 17,000 children who now know how to sew, and thousands of happy parents,

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a wonderful road of success!

We had our usual growing pains of needing a bigger space soon after we opened the doors and moving from a home based location to a store front in Needham center. Then there was the learning the curve of the changing times with the internet coming into play (and still needing to stay on top of this ever changing forum).

We have seen children changing drastically in the past 21 years. They are needing to see quicker results with their projects than the yesteryear’s. We have modified some of our program to reflect this change.

However, some of the old fashion techniques of sewing can never be rushed and we have found children craving this pace as well to break from the fast pace of their other after school.

Please tell us about Sew Easy.
Sew Easy has been family owned and operated, since 1995, for 21 years teaching 17,000 + kids and teens how to sew. With our many years of teaching experience, we have developed proven methods of instruction to individually suit a child’s learning and personality style. We believe this is one of the many reasons why children remain in our program throughout their childhood and pre-adolescent years.

Kids, ages 6 through 17+ years old, will experience the old-fashion pleasures of learning a new life skill. These skills include: learning to operate a sewing machine, selecting exciting fabrics and patterns, hand sewing and much more. Each student will complete four to eight projects during each of their programs.

We have over 380 project designs which include: hip clothing; pet wear; bags galore; decorative pillows; fleece wear; American Girl Doll & Webkinz fashions; and much,

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would not have changed a thing!

From the beginning of time I have had a strong desire and instinct to contact Disney or Oprah or a big organization that could help take this globally. The effect our program has on children’s confidence is astonishing.

Teaching The World To Sew again would be a great next step with the right organization.

Children and teens are craving the old fashion values.
