Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Holahan.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My dad loved photography when he was in the Air Force in the 70s, so he was always taking hundreds of photographs no matter what we were doing. I picked up one of the cameras when I was a little kid and instantly fell in love. If I wasn’t playing piano, I was taking pictures.
It was always just a fun hobby until I had to move to New Hampshire for high school. Being the new kid was difficult for me, so I started bringing my camera to school pep rallies and events so I wouldn’t have to sit alone in the crowd. I felt brave with a camera in my hands: it boosted my confidence and reminded me that I am capable of anything. I spent majority of my days either in a video, photo, or music class and my nights photographing events for the local news. My fate was pretty much sealed in the arts at that point.
Everyone in my life actually wanted me to go to school for music: I’ve been playing piano since I could read, but my heart pulled me towards photography. I knew music would always be something I needed to relax and have fun, so I took the leap and got my B.F.A in Photography from Endicott College. It was there that I developed a love for photographing performing arts and weddings.
Since then, I have been working towards building a strong client base so I can eventually leave my 9-5 and focus on telling stories through my images.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a huge believer in promoting positivity. There is nothing better than seeing someone light up with confidence and excitement over a photograph that I have taken of them. It really is magical (no gushy cliché intended) to watch someone love something about themselves, and I am so grateful to be able to help tell their stories.
I have always been focused on photographing people: whether is a group of dancers performing, a couple on their wedding day, or just a few friends hanging out. As a photographer, I am being invited into their world for a brief moment and I am helping them to remember these incredible events for years to come. It’s like leaving a mark on the world in a subtle way: I was here to capture it, but it’s still putting all of the focus on them.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success for me is hearing my clients gush over their images. One client recently told me that she was terrified of being in front of the camera and was insanely self-conscious. After sending her the final edits, I got a message a few minutes later from her raving about how amazing she looked. Getting to remind her that she is always that beautiful really is my favorite part of being a photographer. It’s humbling and means the world to me.
I think to be successful as an artist you really need to have your heart in it. If you are passionate about what you’re doing and work hard at it, everything will fall into place.
