Today we’d like to introduce you to Lara Crawford.
Before launching One Savvy Mother, Lara honed her unique blend of skills and experience to spur on economic growth for sustainability practices. Lara’s M.B.A advanced her financial and management skills inherited through her accessorial merchant background. She then took that and built an impressive career in economic development. Ms. Crawford held key positions with three of the country’s largest and most dynamic cities and a super-regional, 13-State sustainability organization. Her professional beginnings began as CFO of a family owned retailer with 2 local locations.
Lara’s retail clothing experience provided the environment that led to her realization that consumers desired a way to make purchasing fashion into an eco-experience but didn’t have much choice. Either the “crunchy” style was available or the high style/fast style that goes along with mass production. In some cases, many suppliers and manufacturers were finding ways to “green” their operations but even giants like H&M don’t have a handle of it. In the end, our woman wasn’t being offered a stylish & sustainable choice.
At One Savvy Mother, Lara is assisted by her mother Suzan Griffith. A retailer all her life with a proven record of spotting trends. Suzan’s 45 years’ experience in style buying and merchandising while running successful brick and mortar stores would provide the design and style talent.
Has it been a smooth road?
When I first envisioned the business I didn’t have a lot of experience in running an online business. Additionally, I’ve always been much more comfortable on the finance side of the business than in marketing. Soon after launch, I realized that I would have to shift my focus to those areas that I had the least experience with.
Cash flow is always a problem in retail and my business is no exception. Managing the business financials has not gotten easier as the business has grown too.
When I first launched the set of products was not as deep in safe environmental factors as I wanted and it has been a challenge to find products that are different, containing my customer’s style and have the environmental factors that the consumer insists on. Also, because the business works with many smaller brands there has been some challenges there too.
