Meet Lani Wong of Serene Earth Acupuncture in Cambridge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lani Wong.

Lani, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story began in 2006 while I was raising 3 children on my own. Through my journey of self-discovery and seeking a new career, it was suggested by a very good friend that I look into massage therapy. She found it to be a rewarding change from the food and beverage industry work we had been doing. I said, “No way! I don’t want to do massage, but I could poke them with needles.” She said, “Acupuncture, awesome!” This became the spark which has transformed my life.

In 2009, I was accepted to the Masters program at the New England School of Acupuncture, the oldest accredited acupuncture school in the nation. I felt in love! Old wives tales of my youth, things my grandmother and mom told us not to eat or do (or we might get sick) came back to me in the classroom. It all made sense! The rigorous education and training ignited my brain and passion to help others. I wanted to be an example to my children, that if I could do this, at my age, they could do anything they set their minds to.

After graduating in 2013, I worked for other acupuncturists in a private setting and also at a community clinic. I gained invaluable experience literally touching people’s lives and making a difference to alleviate pain and emotional stress. I decided to open my own private clinic just last year. Serene Earth Acupuncture is a dream come true, where I can do what I love, which is to help people any way that I can.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It sure has been a long road, 11 years, and still a way to go! I have had tremendous support from my family, friends, and all the patients who believed in me and trusted me along the way. One of the struggles was that I had to work several jobs so that I would not go into ridiculous debt. I like to play it safe, look before I leap. Another struggle is not realizing that I am a small business owner and I am always working even when I am not seeing patients in the office. Fortunately, I found a great coach to help me understand the business and planning part of being self-employed. I have even learned to take some time off for my own self- care. It’s very important, but often overlooked when you, yourself, are the caretaker.

Serene Earth Acupuncture – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Serene Earth Acupuncture. I chose the name to reflect a state of being serene. It’s the feeling you get when you receive acupuncture. On a bigger scale, I would like to initiate peace on earth from my own little space here in Cambridge. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Earth is the element of the stomach and spleen. They say you are what you eat. Many disorders have a direct relationship with these two organ systems. It is very important to take care of the digestion for optimal health.

Acupuncture is what I do. I love the science, math, and art of it. There are so many ways to work around a problem. I see each patient as a puzzle and I need to figure out how to put everything in the right place. The needles are tiny keys to open the blockages and let their body do the work. I specialize in pain conditions head to toe, most commonly headaches, neck, shoulders, low back, and knees. Anxiety and emotional stress is a close second and often goes together with pain, especially chronic pain. Either one can cause or be the result of the other. I also practice Reiki and cupping for those who prefer no needles.

I’m most proud of fulfilling my destiny and reaching a point where I can really help people and make a difference in the quality of their lives. I think what sets me apart is my presence with each individual. I have learned from my children that each person is different and I must be present and meet them where they are at. I have been told that I make people comfortable and I really listen to their needs. I don’t make promises to fix anyone, just to work together as a team and do our best. I’m constantly learning and growing. It’s so exciting and keeps me feeling young and alive!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is to work hard and do your best to enjoy a good life. Just be good, be happy.
