Meet Lacy Kay and The Righteous Liars

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacy Kay and The Righteous Liars.

Lacy and The Righteous Liars is a relatively new band! They only formed in Spring 2017. Lacy is originally from England and had only been in Boston a little while before running into the other band members, Moira, Aaron and Matthew Edwards. They were all working as professional musicians throughout the city, but It was actually at a random impromptu Jam session when they musically collided!

Lacy heard interesting Jazz, Soul, music vibes coming out of a practice room, so intrigued and being nosey she decided to pop her head in and see what was going on.

There she saw Moira playing the Keys and Aaron playing Drums, so she picked up the microphone and started vocally improvising with them! An hour or so went by and then in walked Matthew Edwards, and without a word, he plugged in his bass and just continued jamming with them!

Looking back it was actually kind of funny, as they spent around 4 hours keeping the music continuously going, they would shout out songs and just medley them together, improvising parts, soloing, and it was in those first few hours she thinks they all independently realized they had something pretty special here! After arranging same time same place for the following few weeks it naturally developed from improving music.

Lacy bringing some of her lyrics and each member adding their own unique flare, to starting from scratch and creating original music altogether as a band! Lacy Kay and The Righteous Liars was born!

Please tell us about your art.
LKRL (Lacy Kay and The Righteous Liars) provoke emotions, we lend a hand in helping you feel whatever is within your soul. Sadness, vulnerability, excitement, the feeling of wanting to dance all night and be free, not having a care in the world, feeling like you’re the only person in the world yet you’re connecting to a sound and heartbeat that gives you hope and validation to everything you’re feeling, we create music. Music that comes from a place of honesty and realness.

Experiences that maybe only Lacy or a couple of us have lived but the whole band and listeners can relate to in some way. We draw inspiration from a very deep place of experiencing pain and happiness and we channel that into our performances. All 4 of us come from different backgrounds, life and musically and I think that’s what makes us stand out a bit. We take soul, jazz, pop, funk and fuse it together in one song. We can go from upbeat funk to introspective talking about the loss all within the same 4-minute song! We blend all of our different musical styles and inspirations into one band and one sound.

Ultimately we’re creating music for ourselves, it’s our way of expressing how we feel, but now there are people who are saying yeah we feel the same, we listen to you, see you live, and now other people are connecting to our music! It really is an amazing feeling! Our emotions are what fuels us, but its people’s reaction to our music that inspires us! We want to be that breathe of fresh air into whatever style people want to label us. Because we do blend a bunch of styles together. We just like to call it music!

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
We don’t think the role of artists has ever really changed. Art has always been thought-provoking, and controversial. What I do think has changed is peoples expectations and perceptions of what an artist can and can’t do. Some people just want to hear your music and not know your political views, or what inspired your creation.

They want to come to their own realization and conclusion themselves, and in fear of you having a different opinion from them they don’t want to know as they’d rather you not pop their bubble, which is kind of understandable, as art and music is open to interpretation, it’s how the individual person connects to it.

But it is also our ability as artists to tap and connect into life events, world events, that inspires us creatively, and leads us to make art! So it can be hard to put one foot forward and be here I am showing what I think about life, here’s our music and this is what we feel, but then on the other side you may not be able to be verbal or outspoken about life as that’s not what people want from you, they want your art, not your opinion. It can be a funny one!

Current events may seem scary or unique because of all the media’s coverage but all these things have been going on since humans starting forming societies. The artist role is to support and facilitate introspection. To comfort and to let others know they’re not alone in their struggles of existing in a world that attempts to provide stability and structure.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
So we are currently in the final stages of releasing the first installment of our mini album series! We’re pretty excited to share this concept! Instead of releasing a full-length album, we’re effectively releasing chapters of one every 4-5 months! Each mini album has its own theme, yet still continues the story that we’re telling through our music!!

So the first one is coming out end of Spring 2018, we’ll be on all major music platforms, Spotify, iTunes, google etc, and until then we perform live around Boston and New England, and we’re on social media so people can show their support by following us there, coming to our gigs, reading blog posts, watching our videos etc, just generally interacting with us!

Our next gig coming up is Friday, March 2nd, in Boston at a bar called McGanns, we’re be playing at 8 and then afterwards hanging out and meeting people!
