Meet Kyra Hunter of Moda Deluxe Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Hunter.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kyra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After attending Salem State College for 2 years, studying Business Management with a concentration in Entrepreneurship, I became pregnant with my first child. With having to provide for him, I began working as a 9-1-1 operator. Being in the emergency response field can really take a toll on a person; even though you’re helping save lives, you feel miserable hearing tragedy day in and day out.

One day I said to myself I can’t see me being here for 10, 20 or 30 years. I need to be in a field that I actually enjoy. During my time at SSC, I did all my friends hair on campus; okay I’ll go to cosmetology school. I worked 9 am-5 pm, went to school from 5:30 pm-10 pm for 16 months straight with 2 children at home! Once I graduated, I took a major pay cut and started assisting at a salon on Newbury St. And from there my dedication and passion never stopped to where I was blessed to open my own salon this past August!

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not! For the 16 months that I worked 9 am-5 pm and then school from 5:30 pm-10 pm, I had 2 infant/toddler children at home. I missed monumental moments of their growing up. When assisting I didn’t touch hair for the first 3 to 4 months of my training as apart of my training. That broke me down mentally into thinking if I made the right decision.

Saturday fun activities with my children didn’t start happening until the last 2 years; they are 9 and 10 years old now. Sacrifice was the ultimate struggle. This all led me to where I am now. I’m able to take time off whenever my children and family need me, without having to answer to anyone, because I’m a business owner!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Moda Deluxe Studio is a hair studio where I am the only stylist. I specialize in hair, lol. If you have hair, I will service you, whether it be a woman, man or child, I’m your stylist! I am known for helping my clients maintain their hair.

In conversing during their service time with me, I’m ensuring that when they go home they know how to upkeep their hair. What good is the style when 2 or 3 days pass, the client washes and it looks like they were robbed of their money? Every client I service is my walking advertisement. When they look good, I look good.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Our city is great in the real estate aspect, particularly for a stylist. There are plenty of studios available if one is looking to start their own. Now when we get to funding, that’s a different ball game. I started my business with just $6500, a combination of savings and family support. The city is great with providing programs to help you budget, business planning/writing, etc, but when it comes to actual funds, the city becomes quiet.

In being a sole proprietor, I’ll recommend to save, save, save and ask family and friends before anything. The city requires, from my experience and others I’m fond of, many aspects a new startup simply doesn’t have, such as 6 months of proven revenue, what!?!
