Kudzai, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
ABK Transfers is the product of necessity. A large number of developing countries rely on remittances as a large part of their national income. Unfortunately, the cost of remitting money to foreign countries remains prohibitively high in many cases, and where it’s affordable, the cost of sending can often be as high as 10%. That isn’t efficient.
ABK Transfers charges a flat fee, $1 on any transfer, any size, going anywhere. In addition, we use Escrow to protect our clients.
In countries where remittances are essential, people often are limited to withdrawals of a few hundred dollars a week, and so ABK decided to help address that issue. ABK Transfers was created to facilitate the low-cost transfer of money to developing countries that are facing issues of liquidity and facilitates this process through the use of technology at every step.
Our process includes the deposit of funds into an Escrow account in the country of origin of the funds, ensuring that our clients are protected from some of the inefficiencies of developing markets. ABK Transfers then deposits funds into the recipient’s bank account and sends proof of local transfer to our clients. Once our clients are satisfied, we request that they release funds from the Escrow account. The entire process is usually complete in less than 12 hours. We believe that this new approach will improve the flow of funds between the developed and developing the world, and will help to facilitate growth around the world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, we’ve been lucky in that many of the challenges we might have had to face have been addressed by pioneers before us. Despite the fact that much of the groundwork for this process has been laid, we’re always learning from changes that are happening, and innovating to save time, and improve security and efficiency.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is playing soccer on the street without shoes. It was a carefree time where life was much simpler.
