Meet Krysta Lewis of Aisling Organic Cosmetics in Newburyport

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krysta Lewis.

Krysta, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was sick for years and ended up discovering that my headaches and nausea was due to my makeup. The foundation I had been using contained formaldehyde, flame retardants, heavy metals like lead and aluminum and synthetic fragrances. I couldn’t believe that something I loved so dearly could be doing that much damage. The ingredients found in my foundation were things you would expect to find in an auto shop and definitely not your cosmetic bag. I was shocked!

I decided that I couldn’t keep using what I had been using so I went on a search for a healthier alternative. This is where the real problem arose. Either product had leaves and the words “natural” and “organic” all over the container and WAS NOT organic… Or the products actually were pure but didn’t last on my face. I was always someone who loved makeup and was disappointed to find that there was a lack of clean and long-lasting options.

This discovery is what led to the concept of Aisling. I knew there needed to be an option on the market that was BOTH high-performance and organic. Why should women have to sacrifice their health for beauty or beauty for health?

At the time of these findings, I was only 21 years old and right out of college. Although many said I was “too young” and “inexperienced” I launched my own line to provide the beauty industry with a healthier option that truly works. I was on a mission to show people that you can have the best of both worlds.

Aisling Organic Cosmetics is a revolutionary line of high-performance and organic makeup. It’s a plant and herb based line (not mineral) and every ingredient is meant to nourish the skin. “Aisling” means “vision” and our vision is that one day every individual will only use the purest ingredients on their skin to promote optimal health.

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle I’ve had so far is educating consumers on what is truly natural and organic. Many people I interact with tell me that there are “plenty of organic options” on the market; they name 5-10 brands that advertise like they are but when you read the ingredients it’s evident that they aren’t at all. I don’t blame consumers for being confused as certain brands do a great job putting verbiage like “handcrafted” “naturally derived” and other misleading copy on their products, however, it’s not fair that consumers need to do so much work to determine what is truly safe. That’s why we focus on educating the public on easy ways to determine whether a product is safe, both with our products and other brands. We believe people should have a “toolbox” to help guide them through their clean beauty journey and not just tell them what they should use. We stand on transparency and education and know that it will help us push through this struggle.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Aisling Organic Cosmetics – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The biggest thing that sets Aisling Organic Cosmetics apart from others is our cruelty-free officer, animal rights activist and founding member, Ella the 4.8 lb Maltipoo. She strives daily to put the proper measures in place to keep our products safe from animals. Haha… Just kidding… kind of.

What sets us apart from other truly clean lines is that ours is vegan, cruelty-free, US made, gluten-free and formulated with plants and herbs. Most natural lines are mineral-based, which is a better alternative but what makes ours even better is that every ingredient has a purpose. For instance, the foundation is based with aloe-vera to help hydrate and smooth the skin’s surface, then chamomile and lavender to help soothe inflammation and redness. Finally, it has rosemary, thyme, and oregano which serves as the preservative system and keeps bacteria away from the skin, therefore preventing acne. Additionally, it’s composed with vanilla and cocoa which makes it smell delicious!

It’s truly like no line you’ve ever used before. It outperforms even conventional lines and makes your skin feel incredible!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The best thing about Boston is the entrepreneurship eco-system. Everyone seems to want to support local businesses, initiate connections and build each other up. How fantastic is that? Everywhere I go I feel like I’m learning more about a new accelerator, venture capital opportunity or mentoring session, It’s hard to find communities like these and I feel blessed to be surrounded by such talent!

What I like least about the city is the traffic… it makes it hard to get to all of these exciting events on time! Haha!
