Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristine Bahr.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kristine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a functional medicine nutritionist, whose career grew out of my childhood challenges with food sensitivities and allergies. The problem was so severe that I had to receive shots and sterilize my environment to manage my condition. As an adult, I discovered that my issues were caused by an improper diet. When I tested myself for food sensitivities and eliminated the items that caused inflammation, my health improved. In 2001, I combined my degrees in counseling and clinical nutrition to establish “Cutting Edge Wellness” in the Boston area.
I now run a successful nutritional counseling service for all ages and all conditions of health. My goal is to offer personalized service to my clients by blending my science-based testing with counseling. I fondly call it, “Science and Soul”.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The challenges centered on the business aspect. I did not have a business degree so running a small business successfully was difficult at times. I accept insurance so I had navigated through each insurance company’s regulations. I am glad to be on the other side of that learning curve. I have a great passion for my work and I have learned systems to make the billing process and office management easier for me.
Please tell us about Cutting Edge Wellness.
My business is health. I look for the root cause of every illness. It is like being an investigative reporter. I have to look at the diagnosis of each person and find out what caused the problem. For example, If a person has a constipation issue, there is a number of causes that will lead to the effect of poor digestion. Constipation could be caused by lack of fiber, not hydrating well, slow motility of the bowel due to stress while eating, eating inflammatory foods, and many more reasons. Once the root cause is identified then it is easy to treat it with diet and supplements.
I am proud that I have been in my solo business for 15 years. My business helps people achieve good health.
What sets me apart from others is that I care about my clients and I think about treating them long term. By long term I mean, they might be successful in meeting their goals and feel healthy for awhile but then a change in their health occurs. When the change affects their health, negatively, they come back to me.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
In the summer before turning 13 years old, my sister developed a new friendship with someone her age. The sister of her friend was entering college in September. Her major was studying to be a Dietician. After speaking to friend’s sister about her coursework, I had a profound feeling that I was also very interested in working with food. Only by looking back on this event do I realize that it set the course for me to pursue my career as a Nutritionist.
