Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris N. Tyler.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kris. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My dad has always dabbled with photography as a hobby and my first boyfriend in high school was, and still is, heavily into photography. I had both of those influences around me. It started out as a hobby for me.
I started out taking scenery and landscape photographs while just exploring Boston with friends or by my lonesome. That was back in 2011 when I started. I was 17 years old.
From then my passion for photography grew. I started doing events for family and friends to get my name out and also for money. After doing that for a while, I realized that event photography wasn’t my cup of tea. Those gigs were mainly for money and it was slowly making me look at photography more so as a job than a passion/career.
At that point, I started to think about the artist I, and only I wanted to be. I started creating concepts, seeking out models for them, learning new editing techniques. I wanted to create my own visions. Tell stories, Make people feel and see the beauty I see. From then I realized what inspired/motivated me and my art. This is what brings me to the photographer I am today
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Externally, it’s been a pretty smooth progression with my work. There are always bumpy roads but nothing that’s held back my progress. Internally, I used to struggle in terms of confidence and stepping out of my comfort zone.
I used to be afraid of failing and being rejected. I then realized that the only way I fail is if I never try. I can’t let the fear of not making it hold me back. I’m in control of my future.
As long as I stay focus and keep growing, I’m going to reach my goals. Nothing can sway me from that.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a freelance photographer. I specialize in fashion photography, portraits, & creative directing. My biggest accomplishments this year is that I was featured in two art shows and a local magazine. Both are new in terms of exposure for me so it was a great experience and I look forward to more of that kind of exposure in the future.
What sets me apart from others is my love for feeling nastolgia. I want my viewer to reminisce when they look at my photographs the way I do. Whether it’s nostalgia on the 90’s/ early 2000’s or a small part of the childhood, it’s a way my viewers can connect to my work.
Also, black women are a big motivation for my work. We’re so versatile as people even though we’re societies most hate and they try to put us into a box of stereotypes. We rise above all and if that’s not motivation, I don’t know what is.
What were you like growing up?
I was very shy as a child. I was known at school as the “nice and quiet” girl. Only a few close people knew the true me at my most comfortable. Once someone got to know me they’d know that I’m goofy and a child at heart always.
Always been a sensitive, empathic, daydreamer. I loved watching Inuyasha and playing dead or alive 3. I’ve always loved to dance. I wanted to be a dancer and go Julliard in New York even though I never took a dance lesson. At least not seriously.
But regardless, dancing was my favorite hobby. In middle school, I was in a dance group at Bird Street Community Center. It wasn’t until high school that, that dream changed to being a photographer. Dancing to this day is still one of my favorite pastimes.

I have the pleasure and the honor to say that I know this gifted photographer and a couple of her models. Neveah is my niece and I see she has used her sister, my other niece and my nephew as models. She as always been a very quiet and pleasant child who had grown into an amazing photographer. She always saw things and people in a different aspect. Her innocence to the see the beauty in things that no one else saw is phenomenal! We are all very proud of her and her craft! We wish her much success.
