Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Poutre.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was always interested in the beauty field. I loved doing makeup and hair for friends. While in school for fashion merchandising I decided to also get my esthetics license.
I stayed in the beauty field in a more corporate role as a manager, regional manager/account executive and a cosmetic buyer. I eventually was a regional vice president for a retail gift chain. As I got older and had a family (husband, daughter and then triplet daughters) I needed to stop traveling and get something where I could be home but still be creative. I went back to my roots and worked for a salon doing esthetics part-time. I eventually helped a salon build their private label.
As time went on I realized I loved doing makeup and weddings. I started Special Event Beauty in 2007 with Rachel Flaherty who was the best wedding hair artist I had ever seen. We rented a one-room studio in a third-floor walk-up in downtown Bridgewater to do trials. We traveled to our clients on their wedding day. Soon we had more business than we could do and added well-known artists we had known and respected. Over the past 10 years, we have grown to an artist staff of 14 plus assistants.
We still have our first studio in Bridgewater but have expanded to 2 additional studios in Braintree (where we also offer photo services) and one more soon to open in Franklin. We pride ourselves on referrals, word of mouth and advertising with the knot, wedding wire, and Boston magazine.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have to say it has been a pretty good ride. We surrounded ourselves with top-notch talent and people we could trust. We tell everyone: if you don’t love what you do don’t work with us. This has to be your passion.
That said, of course, it is harder to get the word out when you’re not taking in the revenue to support major advertising. We have made some good choices and not so good choices in that arena. We have learned from our mistakes and know where our ad budget is best spent. its all a process of learning.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Special Event Beauty/Beauty Boston – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We mainly do onsite hair and makeup for weddings. We have 3 (soon 4) beautiful studios for private trials, with our brides. We can provide classes and hair and makeup for special events. We also provide photo shoot and editorial services plus photography services.
I am very proud of our team and the reviews we have received from our brides. We are told consistently that our follow through and responsiveness are second to none. Our team is respectful, talented and truly treat each bride like it is their first and only. We love what we do.
We also are able to provide our brides and clients with one of a kind services. Whether it be for a wedding, a photos shoot or special event we will be able to provide our clients with the best in service. We also have our own photography studio in-house to do boudoir, after the wedding or headshots. Hair, makeup, and photography altogether by the same team.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Boston. It’s home. There is no other place like it. Well, maybe the traffic can be a problem at times…
