Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Ben-Israel.
Kim, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
2 decades ago my husband and I opened one store inside the JCC in Newton and 3 years later expanded to the Metro west area. Our tag line was to “bridge the gap between here and Israel” We traveled to Israel 2x each year and shopped for our stores. We designed with the artists in Israel. We developed product and production concepts with many people and began bridging the gap as planned.
Today we don’t travel to Israel as much due to technology, but, we are steadfast with our product development and commitment to Israel.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. When our economy dropped 10 years ago, business was difficult for everyone and the manufacturers began to contact the clients directly. This put a strain on relationships with the clients as well as with the manufacturers.
During this time, technology experienced a big development and suddenly access to merchandise was an open door. My niche’ market was no longer niche. It was a confusing time and making the right decisions for our business was challenging.
Time has done what time does and we are now on a smooth road. We operate 6 websites and have our 1 store in Framingham and everything is going well.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Shuki’s Judaica Jewelry and Gifts – what should we know?
My business is about building community. I welcome everyone who enters our shop and one person at a time I converse with them and build community.
We are known for carrying unusual items. We hand select each item and whether we design and manufacture the merchandise ourselves or we purchase an item from an artist, we are always striving for a high quality product our customers will be proud to present to a gift recipient.
We are proud to offer the absolute largest in store selection of Tallit for Bar and Bat Mitzvah on the East Coast.
We are proud to be the designers and manufacturers of the most popular glass to break at weddings! Our glasses are all hand blown and offered in 15 vibrant color options. Multiple keepsakes are available for housing the shards after breaking including mezuzahs, candlesticks, tzeddakah box, menorah, picture frame, kiddush cups and many more items. We do custom colors upon request when ordered with matching toasting glasses.
In my previous life, I was a Jewelry Designer and those skills I have carried into this business. I will often make some earrings, bracelet or necklace and it will be one of a kind. Otherwise, if I have purchased a piece of jewelry that hasn’t sold, I will take it apart and redesign it.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My support has been my husband, Shuki, and my Mom. Shuki has been the bridge to Israel and my Mom has helped me in my store whenever I have needed anything. No questions, she is available for me. She’s my hero.
