Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Growing up in a single parent household in Boston has presented challenges as far back as I can remember. With the help of my maternal grandmother, my mother raised four boys in the turbulent eighties and nineties. During those times, the streets were infested with all sorts of derelict behavior. Reganomics saw to it that decreased spending on social programs left young people without much to do. Drugs addicts and street gangs provided a backdrop littered with crime and violence. As a result, two of the four boys my mother raised have seen the inside of a penitentiary. One of the four boys my mother raised is now deceased. Despite hovering on the periphery of the drug and gang culture, I survived virtually unscathed by either.

I had always been a solid student. I was selected for elite programs in elementary school and made appearances on the honors list in middle and high school. However, despite my academic achievements, it was not until a friend was recruited to play basketball in college that I was introduced to the notion of attending. I was introduced to the idea of “college” around the same time that my oldest daughter was born. I was a senior in high school and I distinctly remember a family probate judge telling me emphatically that I could not attend college that I had to immediately go into the work force. I am the only one of four boys my mother raised to graduate college.
