Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Marden Sr.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kevin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Having worked for a major corporation, (Beatrice Foods Co.) as a regional distribution director, I came to the realization that I wanted to further pursue this line of work by starting my own business. I had been working in the transportation industry since my family started a trucking company in 1962.
What I needed to start World Class was a buzz word that would gain some attention and lead this new venture into the supply chain Philosophy of the 90’s.
This term turned out to be “Logistics”, everyone was jumping on this band wagon and I wanted to take advantage and get our name out as soon as possible.
We have been in operation for 25 years, we have sales of well over 15 million dollars, and our reputation in this industry is the one thing that I’m most proud of, we are respected in all areas of transportation.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The major struggle along this path is the reputation that “brokers” (3rd party entities) have had over the years.
This term came about when one party hires another (trucking co.) to haul freight for their customers. Many times, the hiring party (broker) didn’t pay the carrier and the responsibility fell back to the shipper to get the carrier satisfied. In this case the shipper was double paying and this created a very bad situation from companies like mine.
I decide to take World Class out of the “broker” field so I purchased a freight forwarders license to insure our credibility.
By doing this, we show our customer base that they are insured that will perform our services and pay the carriers doing the work.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about World Class Logistics – what should we know?
World Class is a supply chain management company. We are responsible to monitor the movement of freight tendered to us by our customer base. We are, in effect the transportation management team that coordinates and manages the loading, shipping, and final delivery of inventory and product on a daily basis.
One of the things that sets us apart from all others in our industry is that we have served the same customer base for over 25 years. These customers have found that we go to incredible lengths to make sure their products and raw materials are moved on a very consistent basis with very little interruption of scheduling.
What I feel sets us apart from others in our industry is the customer relationship we have developed and the pride that we take in each and every customer.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Honesty and reliability, we have told our customers that we are not the cheapest game in town but they are very willing to pay extra to get the service and consistency they have enjoyed over the years.
