Today we’d like to introduce you to Keri FitzGerald.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always chosen leadership roles in my career where I was able to use my hospitality, management, and sales expertise skills. I started as a sales director for El Al Airlines (then a cruise ship company) and then went on to serve in a sales role at the Marriott in Dartmouth, followed by ten years as General Manager at multiple sites.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There will always be some challenges when you’re managing large hotels. During my time at the Rockland (now called the Double Tree by Hilton) I managed a staff of 60 and we juggled everything from weddings, to corporate events, to sports teams, blood drives, and baby showers. The highlight of my time there was bringing in revenue concerts, including a Rod Stewart Impersonator.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Thompson Island Signature Events – what should we know?
Thompson Island Signature Events is where modern event space meets island getaway! Guests board our private ferry and are transported to a natural paradise only one mile from downtown Boston in the harbor. We have two award-winning ocean front venues that are ideal for weddings, receptions, corporate and social outings, retreats, family gatherings, and clambakes. Custom packages and overnight accommodations are also available. The sunsets on Thompson Island with the city skyline in the background are truly unforgettable.
This season we are thrilled to announce we have hired a new Executive Chef and have released an exceptional menu. Guests can select anything from casual clambakes to elegant affairs with fine regional cuisine.
This year we will also be open through mid-November to give people the opportunity to enjoy the island’s beautiful foliage. We are encouraging people to come host an autumn event on Thompson Island!
We like to say, Party with Purpose, because all event proceeds support Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center’s free youth programming. The island’s mission is to close the opportunity and achievement gaps facing Boston’s middle-school students. Each year thousands of students participate in our research-based curriculum that features hands-on field science infused with Outward Bound’s unique approach to character development. We are able to do this because of the people who host their events on the island!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My success has always been highlighted by the strong teams I’ve had to help support me. I believe I’ve been able to accomplish this by balancing high standards with a warm approach.
