Meet Ken and Mary Davis of Davis Hairdressing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken and Mary Davis.

Ken and Mary, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We opened our hair salon in Newton in 1991 after working in the industry for 13 years. Our focus is on the customer – we are committed to providing a high-quality experience that clients can count on to make them look and feel great. By focusing on our clients’ needs and offering convenience – coupled with our commitment to stylist education – we are able to maintain our position as the leading hair care experts in the region. We started out by wanting to create a salon that focused on the client experience, and 27 years later that remains our goal.

In-depth, ongoing stylist education results in attracting the best stylists in the area, and a culture of collaboration and community results in happy, loyal clients. We opened our second location in South Boston in 2015 and have been able to translate that culture into the vibrant & up-and-coming neighborhood we are proud to be a part of.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Creating and maintaining our culture in an industry that fights it has always been a struggle that we are happy to fight. Other salons focus on profits and put the pressure on the stylists to grow a clientele on their own – which results in a highly-competitive, me-vs.-you atmosphere where the client suffers.

We face an uphill battle to rewrite the playbook on salon culture where the client is the focus – from the moment they book an appointment to when they walk into the salon, the experience needs to be all about them.

If you need a last minute appointment before a big event and your regular stylist is booked, you should feel no trepidation in seeing another stylist – because they know exactly how you like your hair, and you trust in the consistency that Davis Hairdressing offers.

Davis Hairdressing – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We know the best way to assure we are offering excellence in consistent hair care services and customer care is to hire and train the top licensed recent graduates and put them through our intense hair care and stylist training and ongoing education programs. Every new Davis Hairdressing stylist goes through our Advanced Education Curriculum (AEC) for haircuts/styling, color technique, finishing, and customer service. Upon graduation, stylists can begin their career on our floor.

As the salon leader and mentor, I (Ken) travel to Europe bringing back the latest trends, products, and fashion to share with the Davis team. Our ongoing education mindset and requirements throughout a stylist’s career are what help to create a true team-based approached and collaborative culture. This ongoing commitment to our stylist education promotes consistent excellence for our clients from service to styling and allows our clients to pick the level of stylist that best meets their needs.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There have been so many – I’m very proud of what I’ve accomplished. Being named the Regional Education Director of Toni & Guy was a very proud moment. Opening my own salon & creating my own educational program is something I’m very proud of. And marrying my wife, Mary.
