Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Pszenny.
Kelly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story with fitness began many years ago. I was a young single mom of two beautiful girls ages 2 and 4. I needed to stay strong mentally and physically for them. That’s when I decided to find an outlet for me, and it was the best decision I ever made. I found a class and met my role model. Larry Leavitt of Peabody, Mass. It was there I begin my fitness journey and never turned back.
All I knew is that I wanted to help people like Larry and his assistant Danny Morera did for me! They were my life savers for sure. It was then that I continued taking classes with two amazing men and then decided to go back to school where I met another great role model. Dr. Steven Dion and his wife Brandi (who was his girlfriend at the time). Dr. Dion kept mentioning “boot camp” classes so I decided to add that to my mix too where going to try on in Danvers. And this is how my Boot Camp started.
I took my first boot camp class and loved it. It was after the first session that I decided I could do this, be the coach of this type class. I wanted to help people with their fitness journey and goals. I then went on to get certified as a personal trainer, group fitness instructor and spin instructor so I could become a coach and try to help people and make a difference in their lives as the above mentioned did for me. And this is how I got started. 🙂
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think there is ever a smooth road in life right? Yes, there were struggles for me along the way. Being a single mom, working a full-time job, along with 2 part-time jobs, and taking college courses was hard. During this time too, I had lost my mom in 2007, my father had passed away in 1977 so when I lost my mom it was very hard.
And I recently lost my brother which was the hardest struggle, he passed in July of 2015. But you always get through it it seems. And what helped me get through the struggles besides my girls, of course, were my boot camper’s and of course my boyfriend of 10 years Ryan Duffy.
Please tell us about Boot Camp with Kelly.
I have been training/coaching people now for 14 years. Our boot camp runs in “sessions” which I believe is a great way for someone to “commit” and “finish” the session. And then they keep at it and make it their “lifestyle.”
We run anywhere from 5 to 6-week session’s throughout the year specializing in strength, cardio, core, functional training and we even have a running/walking group on our “off” days which is optional of course. All my clients have options, they can either attend in the am or pm. Monday through Thursday we offer 5:15 am to 6:15 am classes. We target strength on Monday and Wednesday mornings, using dumbbells, resistant tubing, body weight, med balls etc..
Tuesday and Thursday mornings we concentrate on cardio, core, speed and agility training using ladder’s, pull ropes, and body weight and many more fun things hehe. Monday and Wednesday evening class is 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm and that is more of a total body workout focusing on all of the above 🙂 And our Saturday class 7:00 am to 8:00 am which is one of my favorites is a weight room circuit type. With different exercises thrown in between the circuit.
No workout is ever the same, I like to change it up and always keep them guessing. 🙂 And if you cannot make it in person I also offer online options. Nutrition & Fitness or just Nutrition or just Fitness.
What I am most proud of are my people! I am always getting emails sent to me saying, “if it wasn’t for you I could have never done this.” The reward for me is to see my people succeed and to help them. Sometimes without even knowing their story at first. I remember I had a person in my evening class and she was with me for 7 or 8 years, and she moved, she then sent me an email saying how my boot camp helped her because she had lost a loved one and felt lost but then found our group and we saved her.
It makes me feel great that I can help someone in their life because I have been there, I know, and now it is my turn to help others. I have seen bodies transform since day 1 of a boot camper’s journey. With my help with nutrition and keeping them in check with their fitness routine I have had people lose well over 50 pounds and kept it off because they continue to workout with us.
I think what sets our boot camp apart from other’s is the accountability we all hold with one another. Your just not a number to me, you mean something to me, I want to help you, I truly care about my boot campers. If you skip a class you can bet I am reaching out to you and asking where were you? Although I have to say, they know better and usually will send me an email and let me know they are missing a class so I don’t worry.
We are a special – welcoming group, the camaraderie we have is indescribable. I also get emails saying you motivate me, thank you, well these people motivate me, they keep me going just as much as I keep them going… The group is here for one another, we have all been through many things together and that is what makes us strong and special to one another. We are a family for sure!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Honestly, if I had to start over, I wouldn’t change a thing. Even through some struggles, they are lessons in life and just make me stronger and more motivated. I have learned many lessons from my own personal to my boot camper’s struggles as well We all have been through a lot, but we have each other!
