Meet Keith Phillips of Classic Photographers in Back Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Phillips.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was in college preparing to be a high school teacher when I fell in love with being an entrepreneur at my college job. I started in the men’s formalwear business specializing in weddings in 2001. The owner of the company allowed me to become involved with the success of the company and allowed me to learn on the job and grow. As the world became more casual, we were experiencing a decline in tuxedo rentals which was our core business. This forced us to look at using our existing wedding marketing model to start in the wedding photography business in 2008. We were able to recruit some of the Boston areas best wedding photographers to join the team, and then saw an opportunity to use our digital marketing skills to expand the business to all of New England and then nationwide in 2014 and growing to be the largest online wedding photography company in the country. It has truly been an honor to be such a big part of capturing the memories of thousands of peoples wedding days.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Operating a small business is a daily challenge. There are no days off and almost no time that you are off the clock. Specializing in marketing always presents challenges as what worked last year is almost never what is going to work for you this year. I have also had to balance an intense work life with being a dedicated husband and raising six young children.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Classic Photographers story. Tell us more about the business.
At Classic Photographers, we offer wedding photography services through an online experience that matches you with the perfect wedding photographer and package for your wedding. This has been disruptive in an industry that mostly still requires brides and grooms to spend hours researching and contacting multiple freelancers. I am very proud of our team’s ability to provide a premium product at a value with outstanding customer service.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. I have found that there have been times when a partnership or opportunity has fallen in our lap and we have had already built the infrastructure to be able to pursue the new opportunity without destabilizing the company’s success.
