Meet Katie Robbins of KR Photography in South of Boston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Robbins.

Katie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been an artist for as long as I can recall, but it was not until after attending school for graphic design that I discovered my passion for photography. I had admired other professionals for years previously, but never knew if I had the talent to pursue it myself. I purchased my first digital camera four years ago. I began practicing on family and close friends, spending countless hours on YouTube and any web forum I could to teach myself the basics. The last two years I have really started to establish a name for myself and have transformed a hobby into a growing business.

Has it been a smooth road?
If it wasn’t a bumpy road it wouldn’t have be nearly as exciting. My journey isn’t perfect, but it is mine. It can be challenging finding ways to stay busy in the winter, but I thrive off of the opportunity to find creative ways to capture the perfect moment for my clients. Hindsight is always 20/20, looking back I should have prepared far more in advance for special promotions and holidays to really capitalize on business during the slow season. I currently nanny 5 days a week for 3 amazing little girls. I hold newborn sessions in the morning, portrait sessions in the evening and I shoot a wedding just about every weekend in the busy season. To say “I’m busy” is an understatement. It can definitely be challenging to find a work/life balance at times, but I know this is just a transitional phase and one day all of my hard work will pay off!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the KR Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a one woman show and I am really proud of that. I do not work out of a studio, if I am not shooting at a wedding venue, on a beach or in a whimsical field, you can find me in the comfort of my clients home capturing their newborn babies fleeting moments. I photograph people, plain and simple. I do not have a specific area of focus and I think that sets me apart from others. I shoot anything from engagements, boudoir and weddings to maternity, newborns, and every milestone in between. I love capturing paramount moments in people’s lives. I am known for my versatility. I’m always searching for moments that inspire me to go beyond anything I’ve done before.

How do you think your business will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years I foresee my business continuing to grow into a full time career.
