Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Stone.
Kate, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After I graduated college with a major in Advertising and a minor in Psychology and a budding interest in Eastern Philosophy, I was sure about a couple of things. One that I didn’t really want to work in a business setting and 2, that I was really interested in the intersection of Western Psychology and Eastern Philosophy. With those things in mind, I started looking for job opportunities in Boston, where I was living at the time. I believe fate was at work when I ended up as a Medical Assistant at Cambridge’s Marino Center for Progressive Health. It being the start of the new millennium, they were at the forefront of holistic healing and integrative medicine.
I had the opportunity to work with Primary Care Physicians, Acupuncturists, Naturopaths, Women’s Health Specialists, Nutritionists and more. I knew that I wanted to be a clinician of some sort and after a brief stint at Lesley’s Holistic Counseling program and living at Kripalu Center for yoga for a month and becoming a Certified Yoga Teacher, I started at New England School of Acupuncture and fell in love. I fell in love with the theory of Chinese Medicine, the practice of acupuncture, with the use of Chinese herbals and most especially, working with patients.
I graduated in 2007 and opened Stone Acupuncture. I have had my practice for 10 years now and I still teach yoga occasionally, but spend most of my time seeing patients in my practice where I enjoy working with people on a one-to-one basis.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’m sure it hasn’t been a smooth road from start to finish, certainly life shows up along the way to put a wrench in plans and ideas. However, I will say that I can’t really name any specific issues or problems I have had, so my general feeling is that the process has moved along well. The town in which I practice, Marshfield, was so welcoming and interested when I opened in 2007. I was busy right away and by the end of my first year was seeing over 30 patients a week. I’ve maintained a full practice and continue to learn through my patients and develop my interests as ‘life continues to happen’. I love it.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Stone Acupuncture – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
There are 2 acupuncturists at Stone Acupuncture. Myself, as well as my associate Andal Hatem. Acupuncture excels at treating many different disorders and disharmonies. Ones that are commonly seen in our clinic are digestive disorders, headaches and migraines, fertility issues, pain and sports injuries, autoimmune issues, Lyme disease, anxiety and depression, as well as many others.
Andal has a particular interest in treating substance abuse and detoxification issues. She also is proficient in Japanese style acupuncture as well as Chinese, which is a boon to our clinic.
In my practice, I use Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Herbal therapy, nutrition, lifestyle modifications and mindfulness practices. My particular interest, however, is in working with people’s emotional states, as they relate to their particular complaint. In Chinese Medicine, we see the body, mind and spirit on a continuum and most often one cannon be affected without consequence to the other. I have found much joy and fulfillment and have seen tremendous success, in working with people on their emotional and spiritual, journeys as a means of healing both physical and mental planes. I believe this is the crux of healing and when you can reach a person at this level, beautiful things can happen.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love living on the South Shore of Boston. Here in Marshfield, we are a beach town so we have access to rivers, marshes and of course, the ocean. Our office is located directly on the banks of the South River, with beautiful ever-changing views from the treatment rooms. With miles and miles of conservation trails, Marshfield is a nature lover’s paradise. But hop on the commuter rail, or drive 35 minutes north, and you’ll find yourself in the city of Boston with all its cultural offerings. I think it’s the best of both worlds.
