Meet Kate Maloney of Kate Maloney Interior Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Maloney.

Kate, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up my parents had a custom window treatment business so I was surrounded by beautiful fabrics from an early age. It wasn’t until after college that I was introduced to the full breath of the interior design industry. Once I learned that families were looking for guidance to create warm and inviting spaces in their home then I was hooked!

I immediately left my job at an advertising agency in downtown Boston and went to work as an administrative assistant at a high-end residential architecture firm Charles R. Myer & Partners. Simultaneously my old boss from the agency hired me to design and manage a full gut renovation project to her condo. It was just the exposure I needed to start learning on the job site.

This experience plus the support of my architect friends is what launched my career and KMID was born. After 7 years at CRM&P, I was ready to go out on my own full time. The past 14 years have been quite a journey but one organic move after the next has certainly lead me to where I am today.

Has it been a smooth road?
As a self-taught designer, there have certainly been bumps in the road along the way. I’ve always proceeded with the idea that I will take full responsibility for any errors that occurred in my learning process. Inevitably things go wrong no matter how buttoned up you may feel. There are an incredible amount of moving parts in this business. Our job is to shield our clients from the layers and layers of detail while ensuring they get exactly what we’ve promised.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Here at KMID, we pride ourselves on creating spaces that reflect the families that live there. We take great care in weighing the clients’ requests, the architecture of the homes we’re working in and the investment levels they have determined for us. We also love pushing the boundaries of aesthetic, color and texture to exceed their expectations and give them spaces they never could have imagined on their own.

We have a close-knit group of designers here and we are constantly inspiring one another with new ideas and new sources that we haven’t used on any previous projects. I’ve worked to cultivate a supportive environment where everyone’s voice is heard and the collaborative nature of our design work only elevates the finished product.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I grew up spending my summers on Martha’s Vineyard on my grandfather’s 35-foot wooded boat. The freedom of feeling the air on my face, falling asleep to the sound of the water lapping up against the side of the boat and constantly being surrounded by family certainly shaped me into who I am today.

Everything about that boat, the dock we were parked at and the beach we spent so much time on are forever engrained in my memory. The sense of safely while feeling so free is exactly what gave me the strength and courage to explore this entrepreneurial path. I could have never done this without knowing my family had my back.
