Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Ellsworth.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kate. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After growing up in Colorado and bouncing from East Coast to West Coast and back again, I am happily settled both living and working in Jamaica Plain. I started in 1997 as a bodyworker and have since added Childbirth Educator, Infant Massage Instructor and now, licensed Acupuncturist to my portfolio. Being able to make a living helping people is a dream come true.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been all unicorns and rainbows! When I started graduate school, I was working full time, going to school full time and raising my then kindergartener. I am incredibly lucky to have a loving and helpful group of friends and family who helped me along the way and I absolutely could not have done it without them.
Please tell us about JP Family Acupuncture.
I practice Japanese and Chinese style Acupuncture, Craniosacral Therapy and Therapeutic Bodywork. In addition, I teach infant massage and childbirth education classes in private and semi-private settings. My company is called JP Family Acupuncture for a reason – although, I do gravitate towards women’s health issues, I enjoy a full spectrum practice and often treat many members of the same family. Because of my background in bodywork, I also tend to treat a lot of muscular skeletal issues. This combination of needling and hands on therapy, as well as adjunct therapies such as cupping, gua sha, moxibustion and kinesiology taping are definitely what sets me apart from my peers – it’s hard to find acupuncturists with that particular range of skills.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently? Who also deserves credit?
I have had many mentors through the years who have inspired and taught me what they know. Acupuncture is as much an art as a science, the skills and knowledge you have are proportionate to the depth of the relationships you’ve make with your teachers and peers – not just in school but for your whole working life.
What do you love most about your neighborhood?
I love being able to turn right out my front door and hike with my dog in the woods then, turn left to take the T into the city and enjoy all it has to offer. My only complaint is the absence of any Korean day spas – if you’re from California, you know what I mean!
