Meet Karen Covey of The Coastal Table

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Covey.

Karen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started The Coastal Table magazine after finishing the events and publicity for my cookbook (of the same name). It was a way for me to continue the momentum from the cookbook, but to expand on the overall concept on a national level in another medium.

And as a cook and former creative director, starting a magazine was a blend of everything I professionally loved to do and it felt like the right time to take a leap of faith and start my own brand.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Far from it! For me, starting my own business was something I had always wanted to do, and thankfully I did just enough research to know what I was doing, and not enough to scare me from taking the leap. But there is a lot more to running a magazine business than just creating a beautiful product! It’s a crowded and competitive market that continues to change every day, so it’s a constant challenge to stay fresh, innovative, and aspirational in the marketplace.

The Coastal Table – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Coastal Media LLC is an independent media company with The Coastal Table, our award-winning food + lifestyle quarterly journal, as the cornerstone of our brand. I’m lucky enough to work with an incredible team of people each and every day.

We’ve worked really hard to create a magazine that’s interesting, well-written, and full of solid, trusted recipes. The industry has awarded us with some major publishing awards already, which is beyond belief in all honesty. I’m just happy that we’ve created something special and am grateful that we’re being recognized in the industry for it.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
That’s an interesting question. I think my answer now is very different than it would have been several years ago. To me, success is being able to do something I love each and every day surrounded by people who are as committed and passionate about it as I am.

I feel incredibly lucky that I get to do the work that I do with the people who work with me. It’s less about the markers at the end of a quarter or fiscal year to me, but the successes that come along the way. They aren’t always a win but if you learn from the things that are less successful when the wins come, they feel so much more incredible.
