Today we’d like to introduce you to Kali Patrick.
Kali, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Back in 1998 I decided to try power yoga to increase my flexibility. Oddly enough, this was quickly followed by an exploration into meditation to try and offset the stress of my first post-college, high-tech corporate job.
A Journey Into Health officially got underway in 2012 after I became a certified yoga instructor. I didn’t expect to want to teach, I just happened to like myself better when I was helping people. I didn’t feel so uptight or stressed out, and as a “Type-A” perfectionist, that was very strange! Teaching led me to investigate and obtain my certification as a Usui Reiki Master–something I never would have expected, but at the time my life was sort of like that.
I was still working as a user-experience design manager at a software company and dealing with a primary relationship that was less than healthy. After the stress of my changing became too much and I developed a binging/overeating-habit, I studied Eating Psychology and Mind-Body Nutrition because it’s what made sense to me. Subsequently, I became a coach: because it wasn’t about the food (never really is)!
In 2013, with my life tossed completely upside down and my insides turned… well, inside out…I relocated to Austin TX and in 2015 focused my yoga studies on therapeutic applications–including chronic pain, anxiety/depression, and insomnia. This was fortuitous, as my time in the South was split between helping others and trying to figure out what the heck was wrong with me now. After 3 years of wild-goose chases with doctors and tests, I was finally diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease.
Needless to say, my idea of what “healthy” meant changed several times over during the years. From an obsession with being strong-long-and-lean to stuffing my face in grocery store parking lots to being unable to walk some days, I’ve been there, done that. Most of the health challenges I help people with I’ve not just been trained to deal with, but I also have personal experience with.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think that’s covered in the previous. Sometimes life can feel like it’s full of struggles. But the practice is to not allow challenges to become obstacles. Especially to one’s personal growth and purpose on this planet. There is always a choice.
A Journey Into Health – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At A Journey Into Health, I typically work with people who have health concerns around sleep, chronic pain, stress, or emotional eating, and they struggle to find time for self-care.
We talk about the person’s wellness goals, the life constraints they’re working with, and the techniques they’ve tried before. Then, I’ll make recommendations on the best solution for that person, which might be something I offer, or if I don’t think I’m the right person to help them, a program by a practitioner I trust who I think could best help.
I believe everyone’s mind-body system and life is unique; therefore what each person needs to improve and maintain optimal health in a sustainable, livable way simply cannot be done with one-size-fits-all approaches.
When I work with someone, I not only teach techniques but also collaboratively create strategies with my clients. I’ll use any combination of the holistic modalities I’ve been trained in, take into account what people have tried before (and whether it did or didn’t work–and why!). I’ve also been known to leverage my skills from business and technology to create customized wellness programs for both individuals and organizations!
I’m a unique blend in that I’m “holistic”, and I understand the corporate / high-tech / fast-paced life.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me would be feeling light in one’s life. I’ll leave it at that.
