Today we’d like to introduce you to Justine Closterman.
Justine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I took private art lessons since I was 7 and have done several art shows with my paintings. I ended up going to Rhode Island College for Graphic Design. Around the age of ten, my mother owned an antique shop for a couple of years. The history behind the stuff intrigued me, especially the furniture and the re-design of it.
After I graduated college, I started to learn a lot about restoring furniture and learning about vintage pieces. I thought it was a sustainable product and knew I could make money doing it; it was also a creative outlet for me. It was also a great way to meet new people and be a part of an art community.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the struggles would be marketing myself; Another struggle would be customers who try to bargain with you, I think people don’t understand all the hard work that has been put into a piece. Not everyone is like this though. Other than that It’s been a huge success for me.
Justine Designs – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Justine Designs restores vintage furniture inspired by mixing vintage & modern aesthetics. I specialize in restoring wood, painting, and some upholstery.
Most people recognize me for my mid-century finds and how I can restore them to a modern day look. I’m proud of everything I’ve taught my self and al the trials and errors.
I try to find very unique pieces that set me apart from others because they are not pieces you find very often. Also, my vision for a piece, when it’s finished, sets me apart.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Being a part of the Made on Honor market with Narragansett Beer Brewing Company.
