Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Bettman.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I had to choose a neighborhood but I’m actually not living in South Boston. Justin Bettman is a portrait photographer born and raised in California. Bettman is known for his international interactive photography project #SetintheStreet, where he builds photo sets out of unwanted furniture on the street. Justin has photographed celebrities such as Emily Blunt and Aziz Ansari for a variety of publications including GQ, The New York Times, Hollywood Reporter, Billboard Magazine, and Adweek. His commercial clients include American Express, Coca Cola, Google, IKEA, Motorola, and Spotify. Justin was the recipient of the 2018 PDN Emerging Photographer Award.
Please tell us about your art.
I create photographs with people in them. For my #SetintheStreet work, my goal is to get people to take a look at the larger picture, a metaphor for how sometimes in life we don’t have a full perspective. For my portrait work, my goal is to capture the essence of the subject. Often times, I will use light to tell a story.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I agree, being an artist can be lonely. Find other people who are working in your field and try to befriend them versus competing against them. The world is less scary and lonely when you aren’t trying to be competitive.
