Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Starr.
Julie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Even before graduating from BU with my Masters in Nutrition, I started my nutrition private practice in the Southend, my nutrition practice is going on its 11th year. Throughout the years, I have worked as a college professor, served as national nutrition director for exhale spa, worked in pediatrics at community health centers, conducted corporate wellness workshops, and of course, saw hundreds of individual clients.
After my divorce, I realized that my daughter and I needed a more consistent income, so I took a risk and opened up STARR YOGA, a yoga and barre studio in Roslindale, MA. This studio is going on its 4th year, and I offer both yoga and barre teacher training, and several wellness retreats throughout the year. A little over a year ago I opened a second location in my hometown of West Hartford, CT.
STARR LIFE is my wellness brand that encompasses all of my services- I believe that in order to be your healthiest you need to balance your trifecta of what you eat/drink, how you move, and what moves you. I have recently joined Alpha Wellness, a functional medicine practice in Newton led by Dr. Nada Milosvljevic.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth? I wouldn’t say that, but I have enjoyed the bumps along the way. I have always worked for myself and failure was not an option. When I first started my practice there were very few nutritionists that worked outside of a hospital in Boston, so it was very lonely and I had no one to serve as a mentor to me. My success was due to hard work, loyalty to friends and colleagues, and a passion for wellness.
Please tell us about STARR LIFE and STARR YOGA.
As a nutrition expert with strong credentials, I am known for my knowledge and experience. I do not sugar-coat anything, so people know when they come see me I am going, to be honest; I am also approachable and my advice and programs are tailored to each person’s lifestyle and goals.
My fitness studios STARR YOGA offer high-quality classes in a boutique setting. This means that each student gets individualized attention and we strive to provide an experience. My yoga classes that I teach are powerful with attention to alignment and intelligent sequencing; I keep my classes light though- you are allowed to smile in yoga! My barre classes are challenging- not going to lie- I try to provide a class that I would enjoy taking.
Whether it is a corporate wellness talk or an impromptu barre class on a beach in Costa Rica, people know that they will get a high-quality service with a realistic approach.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Two things: I would have stayed one more year in my masters program to get my RD. My road was hard because I didn’t have it. I just spoke at a Boston University alumni event and told the future dietitians the same thing. Even though I knew I didn’t want to work in a hospital setting, the Boston nutrition scene didn’t welcome me with open arms for many years because I didn’t have that degree.
The second thing I would have done is work on my organization skills from the beginning; I am great at a lot of things- but organizing is not one of them!
