Meet Julie McCarthy of Julie Surette Photography in Hampton Falls

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie McCarthy.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
From a very early age I knew I wanted a career in the arts, I just wasn’t sure what medium to pursue. During high school I was the quintessential art kid. I dabbled in painting, theater, and music. In college I decided to major in photography after loving my photo class in high school.

After graduating from Salem State, I worked for various companies as an administrative assistant while I established Julie Surette Photography. I started second shooting for other established photographers and shot a lot for free to build my portfolio. In 2008, I decided to rent a booth at a local bridal show. From that bridal show I booked 4 weddings and things just took off from there.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being self-employed is exciting and scary at the same time. There are always obstacles and challenges along the way and they are always changing. My first challenge was juggling my office job and my budding photography career. I was what you call a “weekend warrior”. I worked my 40+ hours during the week and then I’d shoot two weddings over the weekend…..it was crazy and tiring. This schedule lasted for about 2 years until my husband told me to quit my office job. Best thing I ever did! Now that I’m self-employed I’m able to be at home with my two sons, which is super important to both my husband and I. The challenge now is being a working mother. It’s hard, I’m pulled in a lot of different directions daily but I wouldn’t change it for anything! It also helps that I have an amazingly supportive husband.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Julie Surette Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Julie Surette Photography is based out of Southern New Hampshire. I specialize in Wedding and Boudoir photography. Most recently I decided to rent studio space in Newburyport MA for my boudoir work. I’m very excited about this new chapter – boudoir photography is amazing! My approach to boudoir is light and sweet. I want my clients to walk away with bright, romantic, feminine images they will treasure always.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Boston is a fantastic city, full of history and charm – which is right up my alley. I’m always recommending Boston to my clients as a location for their engagement session. Whenever I shoot in Boston I always discover new spots to photograph.

I love Boston but if I could change anything about it, it would be the traffic and parking situation. But I think that can be said about any major city.
