Meet Julie Brown of JB|BD in Winchester

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Brown.

Julie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I do what most people with a biology degree do when they graduate, not put it to use at all.

I wasn’t the kind of kid who grew up knowing what they wanted to be in life. One day it was a lawyer, next a professional wrestler (I wish that were a joke), a scientist, I jumped all over the place. After graduating I was fortunate enough to be offered a position in my aunt Julie’s marketing and advertising agency. It was there that I first heard the term “business developer”. My aunt, who seems to have a knack for pegging people said she thought I would excel in that role. After working in her firm for a year I moved to Boston and started working my way through the ranks of the AEC industry, first as a marketing assistant, coordinator, manager and ultimately to the Director of Business Development position. I held this position at many prominent firms in the City, Perry Dean Rogers, Sasaki, Shawmut to name a few before venturing out on my own as a consultant to the industry and speaker on the power of relationship building.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Sometimes hard work looks a lot like luck. The recession decimated the architecture and construction industry in Boston, many of my friends and colleagues lost their jobs or left the industry altogether. By the time the recession hit I had been building my network and fostering relationships in the industry for more than ten years. The hard work that I put into building my network not only kept me employed through the recession, it allowed me to assist my husband in starting and growing his architecture firm in one of the worst economies we have seen.

JB|BD – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My firm helps companies put the pieces of business development together, guiding them through market analysis and historical data capture, event representation, company visibility strategies and most importantly relationship building.

I specialize in creating mutually beneficial relationships through thoughtful networking. I am most proud of the fact that I am now called upon to speak publicly and teach private companies the power of authentic relationship building and networking in unique and more meaningful ways.

What sets me apart from others is that I genuinely love what I do. I love meeting new people, fostering relationships and creating symbiotic connections. I never tire of what I do.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
There are so many ways to define success. Simply loving what I do is a success. When people reach out to me to tell me that I have helped them overcome their fears associated with networking and business development – that is success to me. The fact that owning my own company means I can carve out time for travel and exploration that feels like success too.
