Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Cardoos.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a 16 yr. fitness professional, my journey has been a long one.
Growing up the “short & fat” kid, I found a home in the gym in my late teens. I decided to become a personal trainer in 2001 (19 yrs. old) to lose weight through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. I lost about 60 lbs. What was a great success quickly turned into a nightmare. A growing obsession with exercise and nutrition took over. After an over use injury, I turned to pain killers. Once the injury healed, I kept using the medication as a no-calorie substitute to alcohol, and as it suppressed my appetite. This progressed into a full blown heroin addiction. Naturally this impacted my career as a fitness professional and I had to take a hiatus. On May 1st of 2005, I surrendered to the addiction, and went to treatment. Once clean and sober, I returned to fitness with a new found lease on life. With the tools that I learned in treatment and recovery, I used these to help others. From there I grew quickly in the Boston fitness scene. I managed for Boston Sports Clubs for years, and helped open their Wellington Station location. I managed for Stephen Cabral Studio in the South End for many years, also helping then to open their second location in the Back Bay, Cabral Wellness Institute. Now, as owner and operator of Rebirth Body Transformation Center (est. Sept 2014), my team and I focus on bridging the gap between personalized fitness and nutrition, and habit change science. Over the past 16 years, not only I have helped hundreds of clients transform their body and mind, but I have also helped dozens of fitness professionals become successful. This May I will celebrate 12 yrs. of continuous sobriety, and can say fitness saved my life.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There were many challenges. I firmly believe that every struggle is an opportunity for growth. This fixed mindset is what we try to instill in our clients. Besides the personal battles with drugs and alcohol, one of the other struggles were persevering through the economic challenges of the mid to late 2000’s. Learning to offer more value than just a great workout allowed me not only to survive, but thrive as other fitness professionals left the industry.
Rebirth Body Transformation Center – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Rebirth Body Transformation Center in Wakefield is one of a kind. We specialize in true personalization. We offer advanced tests like genetic testing, food sensitivity testing, and hormonal panels to identify our clients’ unique traits and needs. We create personalized strength and cardiovascular workouts, daily postural corrective routines, and nutrition plans for our clients. We have them check-in with us daily for nutritional accountability. Lastly, we focus on research driven lifestyle habit change. It’s like having a personal trainer, nutritional specialist, and lifestyle coach all-in-one.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is about the path. We stress growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset. Everything is a learning experience on the journey toward self-discovery. Just being on the path can be a success for someone. Some of the habit change science we utilize is “Self Determination Theory”. This details that to change, the individual needs autonomy, competency, and belonging.
Autonomy: to act in accordance with their ideals, values, and beliefs
Competency: that they feel like they can do “the thing”. That they are not “broken”.
Belonging: that they are not along on an island
