Meet Joy Sargent of Halcyons Serendipity in Roslindale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Sargent.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I first picked up a camera when I was nine, taking photos of my dog, Zoe. When I got my first personal DSLR in 2015, all I did was take photos of my pups. Eventually, I started taking photos of friends dogs, neighbors dogs, and dogs at the dog park.

Around mid 2015 I knew this was something I knew I wanted to do professionally, and I started spending all my free time practicing and practicing. In December of 2015 my father gifted me my next camera, a big upgrade from my old little Nikon D40 because he wanted me to keep doing what I love. Around November of 2016 I picked a name that fit both what photography means to me and a word that includes my dog, since she started this all. I put out model calls, got my name out there, built up my portfolio and relationships within the pet community and just let it take over from there!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road. It started out very bumpy and very, very slow. One of the main struggles has been people not taking me seriously because of my age. I’m also a very anxious person, so going out and making the connections I have now, was pretty hard for me. I’ve also had a lot of self-doubt through this, which was another struggle that was hard to get through.

Halcyons Serendipity – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a photographer, specifically a pet photographer. This means I specialize in pets! I’m most known for having fun during sessions and knowing animal behavior, thus being able to keep the pet calm and happy during our session.

What I’m most proud of as a company is definitely being able to give people not only priceless memories but also a great experience before, during a session, and after!

I think what sets me apart from others is definitely my style. I prefer muted, warm, contrasting tones, and darker images. I feel this brings more attention to the subject, and overall brings out the whole image more.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, success is being happy where you are. Do I love what I do? Am I happy? Am I having fun? If all things mark “yes”, I feel pretty successful!

    We love Joy,

She has photographed my pups all the way in San Diego, CA. She is professional, carries herself in a way that makes her wise beyond her years. Excited to see where her passions take her in her career as a pet photographer.
