Meet Jowane Theodat of Olivia’s Variety Boutique in Quincy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jowane Theodat.

Jowane, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Olivia’s Variety Boutique LLC was born from a need I saw for Black women to learn more about caring for our own natural hair. With beauty standards geared toward European features, I felt Black women needed products that would help us embrace and care for the beauty of our natural hair. Being the oldest of four sisters I was always helping out and caring for my sister’s hair. I understood the need to have well-crafted products that maintained healthy natural hair styles. There were many products already on the market, but I wanted to create something based in my Haitian roots for Black people.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a small business owner is rarely smooth road. As a new company in this niche market you initially have to overcome the lack of trust in your product. With many products for natural hair care being made by people who are not as familiar with the type of hair for which the products are made, there are numbers of stories of products ruining hair rather than helping. The target population for the products in many respects needs to know the products you are selling will do what you say they will do before they buy in. The competition in the market is also stiff.

Please tell us about Olivia’s Variety Boutique LLC.
Olivia’s Variety Boutique LLC is known for our hair pomade. Olivia’s All Natural Hair Pomade was created to give moisture, body, and growth without leaving the hair heavy or feeling greasy. It gives a nice shine while keeping the hair manageable. The benefits from the natural ingredients in this product would only be duplicated by simultaneously using 10 other products on the market.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Doing my sister’s hair in the mornings as we were getting ready for school and church. My mother was a single parent so as the oldest daughter I would step in to make sure everyone looked great. It really gave me the foundation that led to founding Olivia’s Variety Boutique LLC.
