Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Snyder.
Joshua, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I lived in Boston in Back Bay when I was younger (1st and 2nd grade) before my family and I moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, where I essentially grew up. I always had fond memories of Boston and moved back here after college to start a business and raise a family. Since returning, in addition to co-founding J & J Painting LLP, I’ve met and married an amazing girl and we have a baby on the way!
I bring over 15 years of trade knowledge and hands-on experience to J&J Painting LLP. As the son of a general contractor, I served under my father’s tutelage for many years and quickly discovered my passion for painting. While earning my college degree, I worked for a large company, where I spent several years as an interior spray paint technician. Upon graduation, I continued to pursue my passion and career in painting, working as an independent painting contractor My work experience ranges from large contracts, such as one requiring the exterior painting of a 50 unit residential town home community, to smaller, interior paint jobs for individual homeowners. I’ve painted restaurants, luxury resort condos, high-end custom homes, furniture, signs, and much more throughout my career. Taking pride in my work and ensuring customer satisfaction are two adages that I takes seriously and brings to the job each day. After moving to the Boston area and working for years as the foreman for Castle Complement’s Painting Company, I decided it was time to realize my dream of starting my own business and co-founded J&J Painting LLP with my business partner Jason Macdonald.
Jason MacDonald grew up in Chelmsford, MA and has spent over 14 years working in home renovation, remodeling, and construction. For several years early in his career, Jason worked with a talented, local painter, acquiring the fundamental skill set and attention to detail needed for the trade. He then went on to sharpen his carpentry skills, apprenticing for 5 years under a master carpenter and learning to expertly install windows and doors, frame, and build custom cabinets. Jason’s strong work ethic sets him apart from his peers. He prides himself on his ability to constantly and consistently exceed client expectations by completing projects in a timely and professional manner. A return to painting in recent years led Jason to work alongside me at Castle Complement’s Painting Company. Together, we’ve worked on a variety of interior and exterior projects and refined our skills in dealings involving new construction projects.
J & J Painting LLP is a fully licensed and insured painting company that provides fine interior and exterior painting services throughout the greater Boston metropolitan area and the north shore region. Our work is exemplified by our attention to detail, quality craftsmanship, and extensive experience in both restoration projects and new construction. We strive to produce high quality work in a timely manner, and will do what it takes to get our projects done right, and done on time. Our goal is to constantly and consistently exceed our client’s expectations and make your home or office space exactly how you envision.
After several years of working together for another company, Jason and I (J & J) decided form J & J Painting LLP and make our dream a reality. Each with a specific skill set that compliments the other; Jason and I make an unstoppable team. Jason is a carpenter by trade with a strong background in construction. If we run into unexpected hurdles on the job, we don’t have to call in another contractor and delay the project. We take care of wood rot and other needs in-house and make the process as easy as possible for our clients.
Our portfolio encompasses a vast array of projects, from large to small, new to old, generally focusing on residential projects. We thrive on new construction sites, but can satisfy the needs of a client living in the space being painted just the same. Whether the project is a luxury home or a quaint apartment, we aim to produce the same high level of service and quality finishes.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s gone surprisingly smooth. We market ourselves well and we book out months in advance in the summers. The hardest problem we run into is finding quality painters to hire to help us get more projects done.
Starting the business initially it took a lot of man hours working on the computer and some cash out of pocket to cover the expenses of buying all the nice equipment we like to use, but it’s all been worth it. It’s satisfying to know you have months’ worth of projects to do and that we’re still receiving calls and emails daily for more work. At the end of the day it’s great to see the face of a satisfied client who’s happy with the way their newly painted house looks. Painting is a rewarding job in that way.
One of the hardest parts is just keeping up with the demanding nature of the work. During the week I do estimates in the morning and evenings and work during the day painting. Then on the weekends I write up contracts and keep up with our accounting. The phone seems to be my best friend and worst enemy some days. Its great people are calling but it’s hard to keep up with everything sometimes.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with J & J Painting LLP – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are an interior and exterior painting company. We’re known for our high level of quality service in both the painting and customer service side of the business. We can give our clients spray finishes on cabinets or paint the whole exterior of their home. We’re versatile and we work well with homeowners.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Boston and all the culture and history. As a skier I actually love the weather and the seasons here. I love the museums and all the sports teams here in New England/ Boston. There are great restaurants and plenty of things to do and enjoy. I’m not a fan of all the traffic!
