Meet Joshua, Lisa, and Zack Ruboy of Zayde’s Market in Canton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua, Lisa, and Zack Ruboy.

Please kick things off for us, we’d love to hear the story.
Founded by Jack Gelerman’s concept of traditional Kosher/Israeli cuisine, Zayde’s Market, formerly the Butcherie II, is a long established Glatt Kosher supermarket/deli serving the greater Boston area for over 30 years. Located in Cobb’s Corner, Zayde’s Market is the only market in the area that sells Kosher foods from all over the world, including Israel, as well as producing new, and fun, foods that will take your taste buds on a trip to Israel! With a full liquor license, you can find all different beers, wines, vodkas, whiskeys, and more from every corner of the globe! Zayde’s Kitchen continuously pumps out traditional Israeli foods (from homemade knishes, to laffa bread, to potato latkes), as well as modern day treats with our own twists (such as Brazilian Chicken Thighs to Fiesta Rice to Chinese Wontons and Beef and Broccoli). The creative foods that come out of the kitchen are endless! Have an idea of a food you want us to make? Send it our way, and we will deliver it from our kitchen to your family’s dinner table! Not only do we have homemade deli salads, pastas/rice, meat dishes, and chickens, but we also cook, in house, all of our deli meats! You can hear about our “Boston’s Best Corned Beef” on WBZ radio! Zayde’s Market also has its own full-service Catering division: Lisa’s Catering! Creating custom events, dishes, and memories is Lisa’s Catering’s specialty! Our mission is to make sure you and your guests have the time of your lives while feasting on the absolute best foods you can imagine!

After taking over in late 2013, Josh and Lisa Ruboy turned the Butcherie II into Zayde’s Market in honor of Lisa’s late father, Jack. Shortly after the name change, there was an explosion in the kitchen, leaving Zayde’s in a tough situation! But with the enormous support from the community, Zayde’s was able to continue operations, and supply the area with the great foods we are proud of! Presently, Zayde’s Market is fully operating, and producing its best food to date! Stop in, and taste the flavors of the world!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Shortly after opening, the kitchen exploded, leaving Zayde’s stranded! Luckily for us, the great community provided us with support, allowing us to cook out of different kitchens in the area! Zayde’s was still able to serve the best foods to the best customers in the world!

In 2016, Josh had a heart attack, which almost halted production at the store. However, with great employees and help from the community, Zayde’s was still able to operate to its fullest capacity!

Please tell us about Zayde’s Market.
We are a long established Glatt Kosher market serving the community in the Greater Boston Area.

Located in Cobbs Corner (Canton/Stoughton, MA), we offer products from all over the world, including Israel. We also have a top of the line deli slicing up some fresh deli meats, serving up some awesome salads, and putting delicious prepared foods onto your kitchen table. We also have Kosher Catering with our Lisa’s Catering department!

We specialize in making memories through the tastiest foods!

We are known for “Boston’s Best Corned Beef” from WBZ Radio.

Full liquor license delivering wines, beers, and liquors you can’t find ANYWHERE else!

We are most proud of the loyal “fan-base” we have created, and the new perspective of the store we have.

What sets us apart from others is that we have foods you can’t find anywhere else, and they are ALL created in our kitchen. Recipes that date back to the 1930’s that still taste just as good!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Zack (Josh and Lisa’s son) – I remember waking up at 5 AM to drive with my dad and Zayde to the store. We would start cutting meats and preparing foods as soon as we walked in the door. My brothers and I would man the deli, even at the ages of 6-8! The customers loved us, my parents, and my Zayde, who created the concept of the store. My Zayde would work through the days and nights whipping up some of the best foods I have ever tasted! My absolute favorite was his hand cut London broils and fluffy matzo ball soup! The stories of my Zayde in the Holocaust make the store what it is…. A beautiful store full of family traditions!

Lisa – As a young lady, I would go into the store with my father, and work the registers. But that’s not where the most fun came from! My dad would let me stay up with him as he tried new recipes for his famous gefilte fish. From grinding the fish, to spicing it, to cooking and tasting. I miss my father dearly, and I think he would be extremely proud of what I have turned his ideas into!

Josh – I married the boss’ daughter (laughs)! I started with Jack at the age of 30, and knew Lisa was the one from the day I met her! My fondest memory of the store is learning how to prepare different cuts of meat from Jack. I learned for 2 hours every day starting at 5Am. Now, I cut meat daily for Zayde’s Market in honor of our Zayde.

When it’s my turn to cook dinner I go to JD’s to pick up some food. It’s my go-to place when I’m entertaining or I just have to feed my kids.

Zayde’s Family Market is truly the best market. One can never go wrong with any meal. I don’t have to cook myself in order to have a wonderful meal for my family and guests. So happy that Zayde’s is close enough for me to just drop by! It is the first place my son goes to when he is visiting from Denmark.
