Meet Joseph Balzano of Central Florist and Nursery in Stoughton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Balzano.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Central Florist & Nursery has been an established business in Stoughton for the past 60 years. My grandparents bought the company 28 years ago and worked seven days a week, helping customers and building relationships throughout town. They decided to retire in 2015, allowing my wife and I to take over the business.

There were many issues with our old building that needed to be addressed, and we spent every night the first year fixing them. From painting to repairing roofs to creating a new website, we did it all. Today we are busier than ever, with a new shop front, brand new refrigerators, and a new employee.

Has it been a smooth road?
Our building has defiantly been one of our biggest challenges. We would work all day running the store and then after closing have to start doing repairs. We built benches, walls, stairs, installed doors, fixed windows and roofs. It was really a lot of work. Neither of us are trained tradesmen, we just learned along the way.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a full service flower shop and garden center. In the flower department we are most known for our funeral flowers. My grandparents specialized in sympathy flowers for years and that has stuck with us and the store. We do some of the most beautiful sympathy work from casket covers to large custom works, with custom written banners. We offer tremendous value in this area and get thank you notices regularly from satisfied families.

Our garden center specializes in annuals, fruits and vegetables. We have a great selection and always unique varieties at have some of the lowest prices available.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The Greater Boston area is a wonderful place to start any business. We have a very diverse community, with people from every country and walk of life. The multiculturalism brings some unique aspects to the community and the wants and needs of the people here. No matter what your specialty is, there will be someone who values your service and is willing to pay for it.
