Meet Jordan Cashman and Beverly Fowler of SAGE Market + Design in Newburyport

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Cashman and Beverly Fowler.

Beverly + Jordan are the founders {and mother-daughter duo} of SAGE market + design. The company was founded after realizing that there was a need for an online store that offered customers good design and quality that encompassed all areas of the home: furniture, decor, linens, textiles, garden & outdoor. The drive behind the design of the online store is to make customers feel like they are shopping in their favorite boutique while in the comfort of their own home and that the experience is inviting, easy and inspiring. Both woman have always had a love for good design and interior & exterior decor and their style can be described as both “casual chic” + “modern coastal.” After many years talking about starting their own company, they finally made the decision to make their dream a reality. They opened their first storefront in the picturesque town of Newburyport, MA in 2013 and have since then been recognized for their shop & work, including multiple “Best of the Northshore” award across many different categories. Today, going into their fifth year of business, SAGE has grown from a small boutique to a large showroom offering full-service Interior Design

Beverly has over 30 years’ experience in the floral and retail management industry and has overseen store operations for some of the best companies in the industry. For 10 years, Beverly managed Winston Flowers, the largest independent flower retailer in the country. With clients in and around Boston, Beverly became known for her sleek and modern floral arrangements and her amazing vision. Beverly also has many years’ experience with designing and setting up visually appealing floral and merchandise displays and with design services, for both interiors and exterior.

Jordan’s background is in Public Relations and Advertising but has always had a love for design (she thanks her Mom for this!). After working a 9-5 for years she decided she wanted to follow her passion and start SAGE with her Mom.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road but it has always been exciting and enjoyable. I think the biggest struggle was defining our company and who we are. When we first opened, and up until recently, we had our foot in the wedding industry offering full fledge floral design as well as styling. We loved all the brides we worked with but ultimately decided to take a step outside the wedding industry and instead focus on the interior design side as that is where our passion lies the most. I think having so many different divisions to our company spread us a little thin but now we know what really drives our business and where we want SAGE to go.

SAGE market + design – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We have two parts to SAGE: the market and the design.

THE MARKET
Sage Market + Design is a shop bringing you the very best in design + quality for home furnishings, decor, gifts & outdoor living. At Sage Market + Design, we have made sure that all the details are there, from choosing the best merchandise (there is nothing in our store that we wouldn’t put in our own homes) down to the ribbon on the packaging. We carry a large selection of accessories, decor, furniture, rugs & lighting. We are dedicated to providing our clients with the very best in design, quality and service. We love to bring in pieces that are unique and you won’t find at other shops in town.

THE DESIGN
At SAGE, we offer interior and exterior design services for our clients in New England (we also love to travel!). We focus on blending indoor & outdoor living and specialize in “modern coastal” style. We work with some of the best furniture & accessories companies to ensure our clients the best style as well as quality.

SAGE is a full-service design firm, which focuses on commercial & residential projects. Our mission is to approach each project with a holistic vision, and we commit to designing spaces that are a true reflection of the clients who live in them. We make houses into homes, and our coastal inspired design is ever evolving and always inspired. We are available to assist in all aspects of a project from start to finish including consulting with Architects and Builders, as well as providing a tailor-made approach to accents, decor and finishes. What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Moving into our larger location! We started off in a small location off the main street in downtown Newburyport. It was small and not near any other shops but it was available and we could afford it. Plus our landlord was really nice and supportive which made all the difference. We were there for two years but quickly outgrew the space. Our lease was about to be up so we had to make the decision to either resign our lease or look for a new spot. Newburyport is such an in-demand spot right now for retailers so not that much was available but amazingly a beautiful space located next to Interlocks Salon & Spa was opening up and the owner, Ginny, and I were quickly introduced she was looking for a tenant. It was like fate. The space was twice the size of our former space and twice the rent so it was a little scary making such a big leap. We had to make the decision quickly and during that time we had so many of our loyal clients tell us that we should do it, and so we did and we are SO happy that we took that leap! We have been thriving here and our business has been growing at a rapid pace and it is so exciting to see that this little idea that we had for a small shop on the North Shore has turned into something so amazing!
