Meet Jonathan Glatt and Sara Ossana of O&G Studio in Rhode Island

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Glatt and Sara Ossana.

O&G was launched in 2009 when Jonathan and Sara decided to focus their design talents and philosophy around their shared love for furniture. Jonathan and Sara met while Graduate students at RISD where Jonathan studied Jewelry Design and Sara studied Interior Architecture. Their combined backgrounds gave them a broad experience and unique point of view when it came to developing the O&G line, which is known for its playful use of color and an unmatched line of Windsor style chairs, settees and stools. What began as a 2 person studio is now a thriving company of 21 craftspeople and design industry professionals

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
O&G began in the middle of the financial crisis, the design and furniture industry like many others were in collapse. Amid the tumult, O&G saw opportunity to develop a voice and reinvent American design and manufacturing. The O&G design mix of surprise and nostalgia, as well as our heirloom quality and domestic production resonated with the national mood and prefaced what was to become a larger theme in the design world, in that way O&G became a counterpoint to the crisis both for us and our clients. While building a busy is incredibly difficult, we feel lucky in the timing and trajectory of O&G’s evolution.

O&G furniture requires a unique level of skill apart from that of most furniture makers and manufacturers. Training our craftspeople is patient and long process much like traditional apprenticeships which take up 3 years before proficiency can be reached. While this process requires time, money and patience, we believe the payoff is in the quality of our work and pride of our shop.

O&G Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
O&G is known for color and a unique design voice that is expressed primarily in our line of hand built modern Windsor style chairs, settees and stools. Over the years the O&G line has grown to include dining and occasional tables, mirrors and lighting.

O&G uses only the most carefully selected domestic hardwoods, chosen for strength and the way they emphasize our unique palette of 19 proprietary stain finishes. The O&G color options range from ethereal neutral colors like our Oyster Stain which has a pearly transparent mix of grey and blues, to our arresting and bold Delft blue and Bayetta red. The array of color options allow customers to create a wide range of looks within our line.

The O&G line of seating has an unmatched breadth of style and quality. Settees up to 114″ long are the ultimate display of our design and craftsmanship, offering dramatically scaled pieces, hand built with attention to the tiniest detail.

What sets O&G apart is the way our dedication to having a unique voice and unmatched craftsmanship is expressed in our line. There is no other company which produces Windsor seating with the range of design, quality of materials and hand craftsmanship of O&G.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for us is when we enjoy going to work to spend the day with a talented team who also enjoys and values the work and community we have created. It’s the excitement of going to work and always striving to grow and develop as individuals, as a team and as a business. Being successful as a business means we get to wake up day after day and continue that journey. We also love the design community at large from other makers, through interior designers and architects to the individuals who support and appreciate great design, it is a special community that we are grateful to be a part of.
