Meet Jon Wells of Revolution Trapeze in Stow

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Wells.

Jon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was introduced to flying trapeze in 2006 and immediately fell in love. Within 6 weeks of taking my first class I had been hired as a catcher and haven’t looked back since. I started Revolution Trapeze in 2014 after spending three years working full time for a large flying trapeze school and disagreeing strongly with their desire to fit every student into the same mold.

Revolution was born from my belief that every student is different, everybody is different and everyone learns in a way unique to them. Starting my own school has allowed me to hand pick my coaches and train them both in the physical actions of teaching flying trapeze and in my coaching philosophy. Because of that we are able to work with all our students in the way that is best for them, to maximize both their learning and enjoyment.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m not sure any small business has a smooth road. It is hard to even get your foot in the door when the project you’re pitching is flying trapeze and circus arts. Because the dimensional requirements for a flying trapeze rig are so specific and outside the norms it had been impossible to find an indoor space that can accommodate our school, as such we are forced to be an outdoor, seasonal business which comes with its own set of challenges. 2017 will be our fourth season of classes and our third short season, We have had two seasons start late because we have been looking for a new home and or waiting on permits, one season cut short by a dispute with the landlord’s insurance company and one season where things actually ran smoothly. So it has been a bumpy road to get to where we are but we have a beautiful new location, a landlord who is excited to have us and we’re looking forward to the future

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Revolution Trapeze – what should we know?
Revolution Trapeze is currently the only flying trapeze school open to the public in the state of Massachusetts. When we opened in 2014 we were the third. Our customer first, treat everyone as the unique student they are approach to coaching has allowed us to build a dedicated following of students as the other schools have closed down or moved out of state. I’m most proud of the fact that Revolution is a safe, inclusive, welcoming place for people of all shapes, sizes, ages, colors, orientations or any other way someone would describe themselves. I believe there is a place for everyone in the circus community and strive to make sure every student who comes to our rig knows they are welcome

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe my desire to see everyone succeed is the driving force behind what we do. Whether staff or student I always want what is best for them and if Revolution isn’t what’s best I’ll be the first to tell them they can be more successful somewhere else. Revolution isn’t about getting rich, it’s about enriching people’s lives.

I love Revolution Trapeze! I have learned so much from them. They have a fantastic group of instructors, a supportive environment, and a lot of fun. You get to experience early successes, and you have a voice in setting goals as you progress, so it’s a great way to challenge yourself and see measurable growth. Flying trapeze is an incredible workout, it’s exhilarating, and it’s totally addictive. And this is a GREAT group of people to fly with. Highly recommended!
