Today we’d like to introduce you to Joline Richard.
Joline, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have had a passion for photography as far back as I can remember. In my junior year of high school, I took my first film class and fell in love. I would spend hours after school in the darkroom making my own prints, breathing in the chemicals and getting lost in the process. In high school, I was an art school kid experimenting in different mediums and spending my alone time creating. After I graduated I went to Cape Cod Community College and took every art class they offered before transferring to UMass Dartmouth to major in photography and art.
Umass Dartmouth was a different experience from Cape Cod Community College and within a few months of me being a student there, all my photography equipment was stolen from my bag while I was in the darkroom. Big campus living wasn’t for me and after this experience, I decided that UMass wasn’t the best place for me and left after only a year.
While photography continued to inspire me and be my hobby and passion I did stray away from it as a career and instead started working in offices and then into office management. It wasn’t until the economy tanked in 2011 and I was laid off that I decided to pursue photography again as my career with the loving and support of my fiancé who pushed me to do something that I loved. With his support, I went back to school at Boston University Center for Digital Imaging Arts and graduated with my certificate in photography. Soon after graduation, I started my business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My path to photography hasn’t always been a smooth road. When I was in college initially and my equipment was stolen it was a really low time for me emotionally. I was struggling with school and being in such a large environment and when that happened it devastated me. I am a firm believer in everything happens for a reason and believe that it wasn’t my time when I was younger to start a business.
I got some life experiences under my belt and when the timing was better went back to school more confident, experienced and focused. While I was at Boston University Center for Digital Arts (CDIA), I was able to thoroughly study all aspects of photography and the business.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Joline Cameron Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Joline Cameron Photography is a wedding and portrait photography business located on the south shore of Massachusetts. I travel all around the New England area capturing families and couples. Every wedding/family is unique to me and I always arrive with an open mind and a creative eye. I have been photographing weddings/families since 2012 and they have been my full-time passion since 2016.
No matter how many wedding stories I have been asked to capture I still cry at every single one. The unique story that everyone has is why I completely fall in love with every couple/family I work with. It’s just my personality… I go all in. My style is very laid back and stress-free. I like to get to know my couples and families very well to ensure that we are a good fit. I get really emotionally invested in my clients and more often than not we stay friends long after the wedding/session is over.
Almost all my wedding collections include complimentary engagement sessions. They are not required but are recommended. This is a great time to get more comfortable in front of the camera, for me to see what angles look best and to learn how the couples interact together in front of the camera. I ask couples to choose a location that is meaningful to them, and then we spend about an hour or so walking around, talking and snapping, and chasing the beautiful light.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Joline Cameron Photography is an ever growing business and I plan to offer more tangible products to my clients.
High-resolution digital images are great especially in this day and age but more often than not I find couples/families don’t print their pictures nearly enough. Most of my packages include heirloom wedding albums because I believe in having a beautiful product to show off your wedding/family session.
I want to expand my offering to include prints and canvases and plan to continue to educate my clients on the importance of printing and cherishing their photos.
