Today we’d like to introduce you to John Morris.
John, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I took over the family company in 2004 at the age of 19. I grew the company from 3 employees with 3 vehicles to currently 90 employees with 32 vehicles which included re opening the Ambulance division. We currently provide over 80,000 trips annually and have a solid reputation of customer service and a friendly family style work environment.
Has it been a smooth road?
No growing business has a smooth road. Absolutely had some struggles. As I had to learn a long my way since I had to withdraw from college, I learned as I went. Made what ended up being bad decisions, which lead to a challenge how to make ends meet, but learned how to not make the same mistake again. Trying to compete against much larger, wealthier ambulance companies and simultaneously trying to work against the age factor where a lot of the doubt in my competitor’s eyes were because of my age.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Beauport Ambulance Service, Inc. story. Tell us more about the business.
We are an ambulance and chair car company. We provide non-emergent and emergent ambulance transports. We also cater to clients who are in wheelchairs that need to go to and from medical appointments. We provide transports for day care centers as well as private individuals who want to go for outings, trips, etc. The proudest of I am about my company is that we do what most other company’s refuse to do because it’s not in the “business model” and that is we rarely ever say no. Even if it means we are going to lose money we do what is right by the patient. If someone needs something, we will be there for them. For example, one instance was a case where a wife wanted to go to Boston to see her dying husband. No other provider would take her because she couldn’t afford to pay. We were called as a last resort since we weren’t a provider at that facility. I ok’d the trip because I didn’t want to be the reason a wife couldn’t say her final goodbye to her husband. What sets us apart is we aren’t “by the book” we don’t have to make a profit on every call. I am in this to serve my community
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next 5-10 years I can see our industry stay steadfast.
