Meet Joe Carreiro of El Potro Mexican Grill in Somerville, Malden, and Lowell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Carreiro.

Joe, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We are a family run restaurant, started and still run by the Interiano family. Still today the restaurant is run and managed by family, extended family and close relations, at all three locations.

Our first location opened in Somerville in 2006, and then in downtown Lowell in 2013, and in Malden in 2015.

Our mission is to provide an authentic taste of Mexico to all of customers, by providing a warm, inviting environment reminiscent of when you eat dinner at a family’s home. A place where you can relax, and feel at home, and take in the sights, sounds & of the course the flavors of Mexico. That means using fresh ingredients each day, as well as making everything fresh every day, including every plate when a customer orders. This allows us to make things the way you like it. So we can & do accommodate having each dish made with ingredients the way you like it, be it mild or spicy, switching up a protein, adding or subtracting a vegetable, or making the entire entree vegetarian, we will make it the way you want it, just like you would have it at home. It also means that we want folks to experience the sights, and sounds of Mexico, so whether it’s the colors or all of decorations which are handmade, and painted in Mexico, and our own mariachi band, Mariachi Estampa de America, who perform live each week in each of our three locations.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We are small, and as such we had big dreams and small budget, whether it was obtaining our liquor license for our Somerville location, {we opened and did not have one for several years}, to finding and dealing with construction delays and issues with contractors for our Lowell location, we have had our ups and downs. We are a family though, ever optimistic and believed and grew by thinking big, but focusing on the small details.

Please tell us about El Potro Mexican Grill.
We work hard each day to provide the customer with an authentic taste of Mexico. We bring in fresh ingredients every day, and make all of items fresh daily, including things like salsa, guacamole, sauces, and chips. All are hand cuts and prepared when the customer orders them. We try to accommodate all taste(s), including the ability to make many of entrees as a vegetarian option.

All of our furnishings & decor are made in Mexico, so we can provide our customers with the sights, sounds, and colors of Mexico. This is also includes having our own house band, Mariachi Estampa de America, who plays live in all three locations weekly.
