Today we’d like to introduce you to Jo-Anna Cassino.
Jo-Anna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always been an artist, expressing my art through music, hair, makeup and the healing arts. My heritage is combination of ancestry and cultures (Italian, French, Egyptian, with my ancient family history going back to the Phoenicians and South East Asia). I have had the pleasure of living and working in Italy for 16 years exploring traditions and learning so much. For me, these worlds and my passions are intricately connected and have been my inspiration and desire to create a space where I can offer and express all of these art forms. Flipp is a place where you can observe ever changing local art on the walls, hear and discover local musicians in acoustic form during our “Flipp by Night” series, have your hair and makeup done by one of our extremely talented stylists, a custom designed facial using products and raw ingredients from our very own apothecary. You may consult with our herbalists or our practitioner of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture on staff introducing a herbal protocol into your routine through tinctures and tea blends and infusions.
I make all the skincare and herbal infusions for the salon, and also custom blend anything from tea to perfume and hair care. We have a small urban herb farm as well, where we source fresh herbs for our facials.
Has it been a smooth road?
There are many struggles in owning a small business. Mainly trying to find balance in one’s personal life. Surrounding yourself with the right people, who share your vision, is key to tranquility also. All in all I must say that despite the tough moments, and the doubt that may arise when you feel tired from always being engaged, it is worth it.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We exclusively use plant based organic products for most services (hair color is yet an area that we don’t have the tools available yet, that said we use the safest brands available on the market, which are claimed to be at around 80-90% plant based) I use EWG’s cosmetic database to gauge the safety of any product we sell, and won’t sell anything deemed to be toxic. I make the skincare and perfumes, as well as the tea blends and infusions. Despite the fact that we are a salon with these standards, we are very fashion forward and have 7 of the most talented stylists on staff. We also offer Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, and our Aesthetician also has her own nutrition super foods company. Our mantra has always been ‘Beauty begins from Within”, and it’s not just a trend for me, I am very committed to this as it is an integral part of my beliefs.
