Meet Jimmy Guzman of JNG Event Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmy Guzman.

Jimmy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved hospitality and my most significant career opportunities have included: General Manager of a hotel and restaurant; retail store manager of Winston Flowers’ two-acre flagship property in Chestnut Hill; and Operations Manager for Off the Vine Catering.

I credit Winston Flowers for all of my most important design experience and I cherish the people I worked with there as well as all the design lessons imparted on me.

When I started JNG Event Consulting, I wanted to create a model that allowed me to pursue all of the things I loved without being confined to one particular role. As JNG, I can choose the projects I work on, the venues I choose to pursue relationships with, the couples whose weddings I design, and the nonprofits I want to support. I love that freedom.

Education:
B.S. Marketing and Communications (Cum Laude) Boston College
M.S. Economic Development and Tourism Management, Boston University
Certificate in Professional Cooking, Newbury College
Diploma in Floral Design, Rittners School of Floral Design

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting your own company can appear daunting, but, to me, once I took the plunge, it was exciting and exhilarating. In all my previous roles I had developed a strong ability to market myself and the services the company was offering, and I knew how to build business relationships that would lead to revenue generation, and event bookings.

The biggest challenge was crafting my own identity when up until that point I had hid behind the umbrella of someone else’s brand. I grew to become extremely confident in myself and my day to day experiences are filled with new opportunities to grow and to understand who I am, as a designer, a professional, a leader, and a colleague.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
JNG Event Consulting is a floral and event design firm that services a select number of weddings and events. We are selective with our clients as they are with their vendors and many of our clients come to us via an event planner or venue referral.

I’m most proud of having sustained and developed so many business relationships that have in turn led to several event bookings, and special projects. 2017, our first year, was very busy, and I’m most thankful to all our industry friends and colleagues who were willing to give us a chance and work with us.

I’m deeply grateful for any opportunity to design, whether it’s a small cocktail table arrangement for a hotel corporate party or a dramatic installation at the main entrance of the Museum of Fine Arts.

Recently, I started filming demo videos for Jacobson Floral Supply, Massachusetts largest floral supply store. I am also going to be hosting a cable access television show entitled “Jimmy’s Decorative Moments” where I’ll be interviewing industry professionals from the event and interior design communities.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boston is an excellent place to start out – it’s small enough that you can develop supportive business relationships and big enough that you can really grow your company and strengthen its presence in a meaningful way.
