Meet Jessica Damon of My Sister’s Closet in Charlestown and Stoneham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Damon.

Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I love fashion. I love mixing high end pieces with inexpensive trendy pieces. I love recycling. I love to be obtainable to all budgets. Consignment allowed me to do all of these things & more. I wanted a shop that was a reflection of me and the way I have experienced fashion……. And our recycling is of beautiful pieces (i.e. Classic brands Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Burberry and contemporary brands, Rag & Bone, Lululemon, Tory, Kate Spade & Yurman). And offering these great designers/brands through Consignment allows people to re-appreciate something beautiful in a more cost-effective way. Win win!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would be lying if I said it has been completely a smooth journey. Our big challenges, like all retail, is keeping it fresh, pricing it correctly & marketing.

We have had a few attempted break ins, but our extra diligent preventive systems – stop them in their tracks, mail fraud (we Ship 40% of our business), & frozen pipes.

Overall, the good far outweighs the bad. Far outweighs it! So, we constantly, re-evaluate where we are, how we grow, & what our next goal will be.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the My Sister’s Closet story. Tell us more about the business.
Our goal as a high-end consignment Boutique is ‘less is more’. For example, we won’t have 40 pairs of black pants but 6 really different ones. We edit and try to bring in more ‘specialty’ pieces. As we head into our 4th year in Stoneham, I believe we continually get better at editing.

So important to me personally.

We are also well known for our high-end bags (Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Burberry, Chanel etc) & the quality of those bags. We have sold to many Louis Vuitton bags to count. We pride ourselves on finding the perfect bag or bags for our customers. It makes my day when someone falls in love with a bag! ♥️

Customer Service is also something we offer that hopefully sets us apart. We love to personal shop for our customers & to go the extra mile as well – if that means moving pieces from one location to the other – we do it.

To me small business is about building relationships not just making sales. We want you to feel welcomed, important and enjoy your experience. That is our goal.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would say I had luck on finding both locations. The first was from a good friend who tipped me off to the space. If it weren’t for her I am not sure where we would have ended up!

The second location was also completely a word of mouth situation. Again, meet all my criteria – small, reasonable rent and on Main Street.

I am beyond lucky to have the support team I have at both stores. Mary is at my Stoneham location & I couldn’t do it without her! Cheryl found me my second location and also is a staple in our Charlestown store. Also, a junkie of all things high end so she is also a spokesperson/model for us. Nicole, going to school for fashion, is an amazing merchandiser, social media guru and stylist. Cathy, is our secret weapon, comes in after hours and makes our store beautiful, shoppable and our window amazing.
