Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Vuona.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jesse. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story is a bit unconventional. I spent most of college and the following years traveling the world in a band called Read Yellow. It was an odd yet amazing time in my life, because half the year was spent sleeping in a van and on floors while the other half was taking photos and designing show flyers to finance my travels.
As time went on, I started thinking about design more seriously. After doing some freelance work outside of making posters, I put together a portfolio and was accepted into the graduate program at New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk. The program was a blend of technical skills and conceptual thinking, which was perfect for advertising and exactly what I was looking for.
During my time at grad school, I landed a job as an Art Director at MullenLowe in Boston, where I was able to work with larger clients and get a feel for the industry. I had some great mentors while I was there, which shaped my approach to working with clients.
A couple years later, at a smaller digital shop, I met my soon-to-be partners at Fresh, Erin Hegarty and Sean Cunningham. We immediately hit it off, and after working countless hours together, we figured out what we liked and disliked about the industry. We sat down over a lot of coffee and crafted a plan that we could do on our own, but in a way that was more likely to be enjoyable for us and clients.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest challenge for me was taking off my creative hat and thinking about each decision from a business perspective. We were thrown into the fire when we started, because Fresh immediately had clients. I had been accustomed to pitching new business and creating concepts and deliverables, but this was the first time diving into sales pipelines and administrative work.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Fresh – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
At Fresh, we deliver brand creative design and digital activation. We specialize in brand activation, creative design and development, responsive web design, UX, video, 3D projection, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and all the other cool digital stuff.
We’re different because a lot of agencies start the creative process tech-first, but because of our backgrounds in brand advertising, we approach everything brand-first. It sets us apart and makes sure that each project is unique to every client and never feels generic.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As technology becomes cheaper and more accessible, more clients want to engage with their customers through non-traditional digital media. I’d imagine a good portion of our work in the future will be dedicated to that.
